2012 Defensive Line Discussion

I think alot of you are just trying to even it out so it looks like a solid 4 deep. But in fact a lot of you have guys in positions that are not correct. We do not even have a NT. We have 1 technique and 3 technique tackles. If you want to say someone is a NT, its the guys that play the 1 technique DT position. They line up on the outside shoulder of the Center (more of a run stuffer), where the 3 technique DT lines up on the outside shoulder of one of the guards (better pass rush DT than the 1). Here is my predicition on where our DL will line up this next year.

LEO
Nathan Williams (If healthy)
Steve Miller
Noah Spence
JT Moore
Adolphus Washington

DT (3 Technique)
Jonathan Hankins
Michael Bennet
Darryl Baldwin
Chase Farris

DT (1 Technique)
Garrett Goebell
Joel Hale
Tommy Schutt

SDE
John Simon
Adam Bellamey
Kenny Hayes
Se'Von Pittman

Now I'm not saying this would be the order that they see the field. But I feel that these are the positions that they are best fit for. I think Pittman moves to SDE instead of LEO because he has a frame that could put on more mass and not lose his speed at 6'5" 245. But for the first time in awhile, we have a DLine that we can easily plug in a kid when someone needs a breather and not lose a step.

Any chance we see Farris as an OT next year? He is tall with a huge wing-span. He also moves his feet very well for a big guy. With the depth at DE/DT, he seems to be a logical candidate for the move.

Thoughts?

You can always tell when someone is a fan of Duane Long.

Yep. OSU's 2012 D-line recruiting class, as it stands right now, is obviously the pot at the end of the rainbow. But it's probably more realistic to expect that to have a major Saturday-afternoon impact in another 2 years or so, than to expect it to have an immediate impact. And it would be fantastic if Williams could come back as he was, but it would also be extremely fortunate.

I roughly agree with this assessment for the OSU/LSU BCSNC game. But for the OSU/UF BCSNC game, I think the fact that the OSU offense managed something like a total of 83 yards from scrimmage, for the entire game, had something to do with it as well.

just watching those 2 defenses and the why those DT'S/NG'S stand out and they have depth. Huge players that are athletic. Alabama gets me every year having a DT a 1st rounder and again,,,,,,,, some of them weren't in the 2 deep lol

We are loaded next year, I still think Washington is the most talented of the newcomers, but I have an interesting question, With out lack of depth at Linebacker what are the chances Meyer would move either Nate Williams or John Simon to there future position in the NFL at linebacker?
Don't think it's likely unless the freshmen class really exceed expectations, but it is possible.

I will have to plead ignorance here. I have not read much from Duane (in fact it has been quite a few years since I have read anything from him). Since I don't know much about Duane and you added your little laughing icon, my guess is you are attempting to make a smart ass response to a legit question by someone you don't know anything about.

Since you know his thoughts on the subject I would be interesting in hearing them. Your answer to my question tells me you read his stuff since you are comparing my question to his opinions (seems like we got somewhat of a pot calling the kettle black scenario here). So please share.

In my opinion, he seems like the most logical choice to make the move based on the depth chart and the quotes of Meyer about the lack of depth on the OL. Since Meyer seems to feel we have a lack of depth and we only have so many recruiting slots open, it only makes sense we may see a few position changes.

It would make a lot of sense to shift to an NFL/hybrid 5-2-4 formation with Williams and Simon at LB -- with C.Grant, Whiting and S.Klein as backups. The current LBs could move to Athletic DE's. Shazier, Sabino, S.Miller, Pittman, Washington, and Perry could pressure passers, seal the edges, and take TEs & Backs in pass coverage. Strategy may depend on Williams recovery.

With the proven field speed of Shazier ; and the (high school) speed of (and sizes of ) Spence and Perry -- they could play Safety, LB or DL -- but it will be fun watching how it plays out.

Just after the turn of the century (can't believe I am actually using that phrase) there were no integrated recruiting networks like Scout and Rivals.

Duane Long put out a two page paper called (I believe) The Duane Long Report. Kurelic did the same thing but whereas Long did his own evals of all the kids in Ohio Kurleic was more of an OSU sycophant who got most of his info from insiders. If you wanted to follow recruiting those were pretty much your choices (Buckeye Sports Bulletin printed recruiting info, but it was mostly after the fact or driven by who the staff had already targeted - plus a lot of Kurelic's info.)

The Duane Long Report (to which I subscribed) got swallowed up by Ohio High and Long also did some work for Bucknuts when they came on board. Then Long tried his own site and is now apparently going back to BN.

Long takes a lot of flack for his misses, but I think he may be the best out there for what he is trying to do and the way he goes about it. He gathers his own film and does his own evaluations. I have always been a DL fan despite a few quirks.

Our defense had 23 sacks this year! MSU had 40!
Even lowly scUM had more sacks than our defense! (28)
I think we can get in the 30s. That would make a huge difference versus watching Big passers stand back there waiting for guys to get open every week.
We get Cal early so that will give us an idea how effective the pass rush will be in 2012.

Spence is 245 now, likely to be 250+ by the time he gets on campus. I don't recall seeing too many 250 lb safeties running around, besides Lendak, but I think he is the exception, not the rule
