2014 tOSU Defense Discussion

Am I the only one that LIKES Josh Perry? I think with a solid core of LB's around him, he can do some pretty big things. He's got good size, and decent speed. I could see him being a good run stuffing LB next season.
He's making steady progress and he has a ton of talent. He's started making more plays in games. There is some doubt about C. Grant's career as he's had multiple concussions. And his back is a problem, also. I think we see a lot of McMillen early.

Its hard to look great when your 2ndary is so weak and there is no true MLB. Josh will be fine next year. He's not great yet but he gets the job done so far. I'm a big fan of Josh because hes a local guy
Yeah.. he went to my old High School.. Go Braves! When I went there.. it was just a small country school.. Now there are three High Schools in the Olentangy district lol.

What would you all say is the area that needs the most improvement to be successful next year; DB's or LB's?

Also, a personal aside, I hope we instill some more 4-3 fronts instead of 4-2....I think a part of the LB struggles is not just the young guys making the jump from HS to college, the typical strength and speed of the game increases, but the fact that they are covering much, much more territory than they are used to. We've got some young LB's who have the speed that we can keep them up front, guys like Perry, Mitchell, Johnson, etc. without having to bring in a fifth DB whose dropping back while we are getting picked apart on the edges.

I think playing with two Lbs requires more speed and must make faster reads..Lb's from HS seem to have trouble adjusting to this unless their Athletic freaks(Shazier) or really understand reads and keys. Boren transferred to d because he understood O and knew what to look for. Perry and Grant both are not slow really but look a step slow on the field to me, they are just late.

Grant has trouble turning, could be he's bulked up too much but maybe it's just he's not seeing things/recognition. Perry is starting to see and react better. He's still learning but he is pretty fast but not Shazier fast!

Given the percentage of non-base defense we play nowadays, I just hope we land the best DB coach regardless of play-calling abilities so we can rely less on LBs in pass coverage. Playcalling is overrated relative to developing technique and having a well defined defensive identity in my humble opinion. Anyone can call a good defense if there are eleven gifted athletes who play fundamentally sound

IMO we have more talented DBs than LBs, so 4-2 makes more sense and also with more offense running spread schemes, running nickel puts less pressure on our LBs. we have mostly run stopping LBs, and the young guys are the most athletic but need time to mature. 3 LBs is almost asking us to get burned in mismatches with slot guys who are becoming more and more important to offenses in colleges and the nfl, as well as TEs who are becoming more athletic. Just because some of the guys have speed, doesn't mean they can pass cover, since many aren't required to do so in HS

I'd like to believe that, but personnel decisions on Defense in the past year seem to be heavily influenced by seniority. Particularly in the secondary.
Even Bosa had to come from behind to "earn" his starting spot, and only got that chance due to injury.
With Grant being a Senior.... I have to assume he will retain remain the MLB. Of course depending what happens with the open coaching position, that could change.
