2014 tOSU Wide Receiver Discussion

Scout (Free) - WRs Hope Talent Translates To Production

Good read. Includes Dontre vid that I posted in his thread.

Considering that Smith and Herman are usually pretty critical (or candid, either way I am ok with it), they have had glowing words about Dixon's ability and work ethic. Of course we knew he was talented, but to repeatedly hear that he is approaching the game with maturity and dedication is a huge plus. We have a ton of talent to work with, just interested to see how we put it all together. Plenty of talent on the perimeter with guys like D. Smith, C. Smith, Thomas, and Greene. Add in some explosive guys like Marshall and Dontre inside, plus a hopefully healthy Clark that can be inside or out, and you have to at least be excited. And obviously you can't forget Dixon, plus I'm not convinced that Noah Brown won't make some noise with his style of play.

This is a group that I, and maybe Meyer agrees, still isn't up to elite levels.

A huge task and opportunity to transform that perception now. They have added pressure to be sharp and make plays for the offense. We know Devin Smith can run a fly route, can he do more and can he make the reliable play to keep the offense moving? Who's going to be the steady Dane Sanzenbacher or Philly Brown to get in the passing windows across the middle and make a first down catch?

Really hoping some stars emerge.

Through 2 games lots of dropped balls (many very catchable) and now wrong routes being run. I used to get upset with Brax throwing fastballs 5 yds downfield but JT has a nice touch on the ball and guys have stone hands.
JT was under throwing passes quite a bit, but still the receivers should catch the ones that get to them. It's not like they are bullets. Very catchable tosses for the most part.

Haven't seen a lot of good things mentioned about wr performance last night, however,
Michael Thomas was one bright spot in an otherwise disappointing position performance,
6 catches, and a td out of 9 total receptions for all buckeye receivers!
In other words Barrett completed 3 passes to Va Tech db, 3 to Buckeyes not named Michael Thomas, and 6 to Thomas.
I like what I see, I.e. Thomas could really be our go to receiver when a completion, 3rd down conversion or big play is needed!

Thomas and Devin Smith have to get the majority of "touches" at WR. Corey Smith is not ready yet for "prime time".

Its hard to ever rely on Devin. He'll step up against small time competition but then get lost in the shuffle against good competition. Frustrating player. The fact that Barrett went to Smith more often says a lot, that Smith once again can't run the proper routes and get constant separation from DBs. I think we have to still to depend on Corey Smith.

Regarding how often he went to Corey, it might just be that Corey was his first read. At that point in the game, JT was under constant pressure and rarely able to progress to the next read.
I hope Thomas is solidifying his position. He and JT have good chemistry and trust.
Devin will always get a lot of time for experience, blocking, and consistent deep threat.

Pretty discouraging that the WR's supposedly practiced against press coverage all spring and fall but still can't produce against it. It can't be talent level.
I think maybe it was talent level, but not just of the OSU receivers. VT's DB's were good, and I can see why the VT coaches felt it was a reasonable gamble to put them in man coverage with no safety support on most plays. OSU's receivers were getting open from time to time, but not by much. In order for OSU to make them pay for thatconsistently, Barrett had to put the ball just about perfectly on-target and the receiver had to make a good catch. More often than not, one of those things didn't happen.

Overall, I do think it was largely talent (where I'm defining "talent" as a combination of pure ability and experience). OSU's QB/receiver combo right now is merely decent (it's not horrible), but VT's secondary, from what I saw last weekend, is good to very good.
