2015-2016 B1G Men's Basketball

Bo Ryan is going to regret coaching this shit show of a season, if he hasn't already. He was soooo close to being able to ride off into the sunset after last season, but he couldn't resist coming back. Did someone forget to tell him Kaminsky ran out of eligibility and they have no real bucket-getters this season?

I know they have Hayes and Koenig, but those guys are going to be in a much different situation when teams are keying on them and they can't just play off of Kaminsky and Dekker to get open shots or only take shots on occasion, they have to take on a lot heavier shot loads. They aren't good enough scorers by themselves to carry that team obviously. Jackson was a whipping boy to their fans for daring to make occasional turnovers, but he often made plays offensively at key moments at the end of the clock and towards the ends of games. Even the Croatian was a decent player for them last season, and he's gone, too. Too many holes in the dike for the Dutch Boy, as Kenny Smith would say

There are going to be a lot of growing pains with this team, no doubt.

The question will be whether or not Koenig and Hayes can create their own shot. I think Koenig can, as can Hayes, but he hasn't been much of an offensive presence through two games this year. I just wonder how different this team would look with a senior Dekker on the roster.

Where this team will run into trouble is guard defense. Gasser and Jackson were both really stout - Koenig just isn't at that level yet. I expect them to get routinely burned by quick guards.

But I'm really excited about the group of freshmen. Charlie Thomas is built like a tank, and Khalil Iverson and Alex Illikainen do a bit of everything. Ethan Happ has been underwhelming to this point.

Another rule change, the officials seem to be less inclined to allow physical play on defense, they are calling more fouls and they are supposed to prevent MSU- and Wisconsin-style grabbing/holding of cutters. I believe the NCAA officiating rules change instructional video may even have highlighted a foul UW made and got away with in the F4 last year to illustrate that point. The restricted arc being moved out also hurts the less athletic defenses that have to rely on position defense as opposed to shot blocking. Of course less shot clock makes it tougher for teams like UW that have to milk the clock to get open shots against good defenses (obviously Siena is putrid on defense, UW has always lit up the soft defenses like them, it's the tougher ones that the rule change is going to hurt them with). And of course Kaminsky, Dekker, Gasser, Jackson, and Dukan are all gone and in their place is a bunch of freshmen. Altogether, it became a lot tougher to be Bo Ryan from last season to this one.

insane game for Valentine. I always thought he would be a good player for them, and he has been, but I never expected that kind of a ceiling. I don't expect him to play like that every game, of course, but if can come anywhere close he might be the frontrunner for top player in the conference.
