Game Thread 2015 National Championship Game: (2) Oregon vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 12th @ 8:30p ET, ESPN

Again, the yards allowed is deceiving since the Ducks have only trailed a couple times all year. Most teams have had to play from significant deficits. That means they had no choice but to throw the ball a lot. Does it really matter if you give up another 200-300 yards if you're winning by 35 points in the second half? No, it really doesn't.

Another thing was getting adjusted to our new D-Coordinator the first half of the season. As I already mentioned, we've been much better in points allowed over the last 7 games.

In addition, Oregon broke in a LOT of freshman during the season for added depth at certain positions. We'll regularly rotate 18-20 players on defense, so we have to find the depth somewhere. That means a lot of young players play and that usually results in giving up more yards than you normally would.

Off topic, but regarding playing freshmen goes, I just discovered the other day that 40% of our points scored on offense this year has been by either true or redshirt freshmen. That's astounding and bodes for a bright future. :-)

You know Oregon but you need to research your opponent as well befor touting things like underclassmen that play. Oregon is the 31st most experienced team in the nation. Ohio State checks in at 109th. We have 22 freshmen and sophomores in the two deep.

Additionally you seem to be insinuating that Ohio State will gets yards after they fall behind. Might want to research what we've done to the top 20 defenses we played this year. I'd be very concerned about our offense if I was a Duck fan.

The main point was that OSU manhandled that offense for large stretches of that drive. I can't envision that happening again, between the much better QB in Mariota and a much more flawed OSU defense. I do expect them to make some plays but scoring less than 35 is a recipe to lose.

Depth chart

DE Heyward vs Bosa - I'm taking Heyward, because I know which player I'm getting, and I need that discipline to stop Oregon. Bosa when he's on surpasses Cam, but his floor is lower than Cam's.

DT Worthington vs Washington - I lean towards Doug in this game, though it's close.

DT Larimore/Denlinger vs Bennett is an interesting battle. Mike is a top-20 pick but Larimore was so stout and enormous in this game. The ability to actually rely on a replacement in a tiring, uptempo game is huge as well.

DE Gibson vs Miller/Frazier - One huge game this post season aside (For both), this isn't a very close battle. Obviously Spence would have been pretty salty.

SLB Spitler vs Perry is a tough call. Spitler was undervalued and showed more consistency on the field than Josh. I think it's at worst a wash and possibly a small victory for 09.

MLB Rolle was a demon. So fast, so instinctive, so versatile. Grant would compare better but lose to Spitler at MLB, but obviously gets destroyed vs Rolle.

WLB Homan vs Lee is interesting. Darron is so quick and an excellent blitzer, but he's also undersized. I'd also submit that Darron probably battles against Jermale Hines if you put him on that squad. Is this a win for the new team? Maybe, depending on how you classify Darron. I think he'd be a star and probably be in a dogfight with Jermale.

CB Grant might be close to the 09 version of Chekwa. Either way that's a wash and with the disparities elsewhere, they need some wins to balance it out.

S Coleman was an all-american. Bell is miles away from there, despite making some clutch interceptions lately. I'd be thrilled with Anderson Russell level play there, let alone Coleman.

S Russell was much maligned but that was in contrast to the caliber of players OSU has fielded in the secondary. Powell has just as many breakdowns in coverage and is considerably worse against the run.

CB Torrence and Apple are probably close.

OSU has a decent to good defense with 3 studs in Bosa, Bennett and Lee. The problem is the weaknesses are far more glaring than those on the 09 team. When those guys play above their abilities and are merely decent, the 14 D becomes good to very good. When they play about like usual, it can become a very suspect defense on the ground.[/URL]
you and I have a very very different take on the 09' team defense.. It seems you favor the entire 09' defense

My take

Bosa/Heyward- Heyward was maybe more consistent but production wise Bosa. Overall Bosa for his equal size but undeniable better athletic ability. Bosa

Worthington/Washington- Both are similar players with height but how can you take Worthington over Washington? Washington

Bennett/ Larrimore- All American, like 7 sacks and just as disruptive. Bennett

Gibson/Miller- Gibson and it's not all that close

Spitler/Perry- Spitler was a very good tackler and Perry probably is more athletic but you knew what you got with Spitler. Overall probably Spitler

Rolle/Grant- Rolle was a missle so I'll take him. Rolle not close

Lee/Homan- Very interest matchup here. Homan was such a underrated LB but I'll take Lee's speed, nose for the football, and tendancy for big play any day. Lee

Grant/Chekwa- None of you must remember Chekwa very well but he was the king of the "not turning around" for the football. Grant is just as good in run support, he's faster, he's bigger, and ask yourself who would you take one on one against Lippett? Chekwa or Grant? Grant.

Torrence/Apple- They're both slightly bigger corners but Apple still has the edge in size. Also speed wise I'll take him as well. Apple.

Powell/Russel- Very close here as both have a tendancy to have some mistakes... However, because Powell can catch INT's I give him the nudge. Also there is a big size difference between the two

Bell/Coleman- Bell is better in coverage and Coleman better in support. I gave the edge to Bell because we are compairing a sophomore to a Senior. Also Bell is a little bigger/athletic

Overall I think the 09 defense has a better rush from the outside but aren't in the same ballpark through the middle of the defense. I think the 09' LB's are superior due to being sound but I think athletically and explosiveness wise this years defense is better. The secondary I feel is better this year by a good margin due to the size, speed, and athleticism disparity between the two. 09's defense was more sound but no where near the ability as this years defense IMO when you look at how young these guys are and how much they improve every game.

Honestly, #5 (Devan Allen), played quite a bit early in the season but as time went on Mariota began to distribute the ball around a lot more. Allen was our fastest receiver, but we're loaded at the position, so although you never want to lose a player of his caliber, we have plenty of quality guys at the position.
That sort of speed though is a loss. When that sort of Vertical threat is removed from your offense all the sudden perhaps teams can start to creep forward a bit more with not as much fear (not as much at least)

I see our defense playing pretty damn well for this one. It's a new era of football, so I can't realistically expect a shutout or anything crazy. But I do think we have the players and the coaches to tighten down on the Quack Attack.

It may be naive of me to say, but I think tOSU holds them under 35. Just can't see our defense getting five touchdowns scored on them next Monday.

Can't wait.

Been reading Oregon forums. They are pretty respectful. I don't know if that is just their nature or if it's a product of what Ohio State has done our last two games. Either way, it's pretty refreshing to not see stifling arrogance and hubris like we did on the Alabama boards.

Oregon has never won a football NC. They have no reason to be overconfident/boastful/rude, etc. Recently 'Bama won 3 NC's in four years. Big difference. Plus Alabama's extensive football history, much like the Buckeyes. Plus you add the sec dominance of late and it's easy to see why "they" act/acted like a horse's ass. Most realistic Oregon fans are probably sayin', please god, just let us have one NC!

As many of you know, one of the reasons many dislike Ohio State football is because of their longgg history of obnoxious fans. Hey, when you have more football fans than any other college, there's more opportunity of having unpleasant/repugnant fans. Again, a matter of #s. :urban2:

That's strange, I don't recall insinuating anything about Ohio State. The fact that we play 18-20 guys on defense is just that, a fact. The fact that freshman have scored 40% of our points this year was quoted by your own Kirk Herbstreit during the Rose Bowl.

It's freshmen unless one player did all of the scoring.

You used your "18-20" number touting how young Oregon is. I used facts to point out that Oregon is actually in the upper 25% of teams in regards to experience. Ohio State is close to the bottom of the pack as one of the youngest teams in the NCAA.

There is a monumental difference between younger players playing in blowouts and younger players who are in the two deep.

Joe, a note of warning: many on this site consider Herby a turncoat because he doesn't slobber all over the Buckeyes on ESPN.

I notice that FSU seems to be the only team in the tourney where youth wasn't mentioned. The days of "a senior laden team" seem to be over. Attrition of those 4* and 5* athletes who turn out to be 1* and 2*, those who are encouraged to move on and free up a scholarship and those who leave for the NFL puts more and more of the game into the hands of frosh and sophomores.
