2015 Offense Discussion

Someone explain to me what our pass game has designed to beat pressure. We faced consistent pressure yesterday and our pass game was barely functional. There are things you can do to beat pressure, obviously---you can't just say "oh well, our protection has to get better." Illinois was facing pressure from our d-line as well and I thought they schemed up a few plays to beat it. I didn't see that from our offense. What am I missing? We are going to need some pressure beaters against Sparty and tsun.

I've no doubt Herman would have dialed something up. I agree with you and noticed the same thing.

O Line is certainly a concern. I think the lack of production from Cardale has to come in some part from this. As previously stated, JT is able to mask some O Line weakness that Cardale can't.

I think it's important to note that this O Line probably played above it's head for the last 3 games of last season. You don't look at the players and see it overflowing with talent. Pat and Taylor are NFL guys but it's not like the entire O Line is stacked with NFL talent beyond those 2 IMO. At least based on their play this year. And Taylor's play has been far too inconsistent given his talent. It's just a testament to how good of a job Coach W has done. If we make another deep NC run this year it will be on the play of this group and I'm hoping coach can get them ready.

While pass protection was certainly an issue on Saturday JT also looked rusty in the pocket. There were several times when he could have stepped up into the pocket to throw or to run with a wide open field in front on him. His pocket presence needs to improve.

I felt he looked rusty as well. Hopefully he has the rust knocked off now, but he's probably still working his way back into form from the long layoff. He really should get better every start for the rest of the season as he becomes more comfortable as the starter.

It'll be interesting to see if the offensive staff has been holding back on some stuff this week... or if they're just not doing some things because of other reasons.
Offense really needs to get rolling for Playoffs imo and this seems like the week to start breaking it out and make Harbaugh and Ferentz seriously concerned.

It's felt like all year this team has been trying to get a starting qb reps to become the actual starter of this team. Saying that, the O has been very pedestrian. Think the playbook opens up a lot more this week. Has too. See pop screens to Brax and Wilson and quick slants to Thomas, Marshal and Samuel. Run up the gut, roll out to the edge and hit the TE on seem routes. This may be a wet dream fantasy but do think we see more variety this week. Saying that, the variety show will put up 43 just to make things different

I hope the playcalling opens up a bit for MSU, but has that ever been the case?

Typically, it seems like seasons where us fans had been waiting for the team to show something different for tougher games at the end of the season have gotten more of the same. We've never been a trick play or misdirection team. So that means "opening it up" means going away from the base offense they've been running for 10 games.

From my perspective, the problem I've seen is offensive cohesion and playcalling. Warinner took a mishmash OL from Bollman and created 3 years of the best offensive line play in a decade and a half. It's fallen off this year after dominating most of last season. This throws off the rest of the offense. Beck hasn't been able to get QB play back to last year's level with the same personnel, which isn't surprising.

People act like OSU struggled on offense last year until that last 3 games. Except JT broke Big Ten records and OSU constantly put up 30, 40, 50 points. Penn State and Michigan were tough games last year, then the team broke out again.

I'm hoping for a break out game for the offense and a consistent defensive performance. They're going to need to crunch some numbers on offense and see what magic they can come up with.

IIRC it took JT a few games to find his groove last year. This will pretty much be his third start of the season after rehabbing an injury through the whole off-season. I think he will continue to get better as he settles into his groove over the next several weeks. For me the biggest things they need to fix are the OL dominating like they did at the end of last season and fast/accurate play calls. As Beck and Warinner get more comfortable running the show with JT this will hopefully get better. As much as I hate to say it we need more tempo on offense.

Plays called into the field have taken forever this year and have led directly IMO to false start penalties, delay of game and wasting of our TOs. We have got to get the play in quicker and we have got to protect the passer. We do those and I'm Confident we can be every bit as good as last year down the stretch.

I'm not a huge fan of Beck but to think the loss today and the occasional struggles throughout the season were entirely on him is choosing to ignore the times our players just didn't execute well enough. It's difficult to repeat, especially for 20 year old kids who spent all summer hearing how great they were and were voted #1 unanimously before the season.

Playcalling is terrible, but today was really all on the Lines. Mostly the OLine. The DLine shot themselves in the foot a few times too, and then cracked when the Offense couldn't manage to stay on the field for any time... but we should be able to break 14 points in this kind of game. To think we needed 2 gifts just to get 14 is pretty terrible on the offensive line.
