2018 Week 3 CFB Open Thread

ESPIN trying to work their magic to make this schedule look like anything other than the steaming pile of mastadon dung that it is will be fun to see unfold this year:

First good team they play will be in the playoffs (and this is an example of why the CFB playoffs are still so utterly fucked imo. Nothing resembling a consistent framework for playing the same kind of schedules.)

For a second I thought Clemson had rejoined the SECSECSEC with that schedule. That's putrid.

If they lose any of those remaining games they are done. Hell if they don't win most of them by 20+ they shouldn't be in either....blech...

I think they did play the Taliban in 1901.

That's a common misconception and it's due to a smudge on the original archived written record of the 1901 season.

The really played Talia Hobans School for one legged blind 9 year old girls and defeated them 86-0. A smudge on the sheet makes it look like "taliban".

I was looking to see if Rutgers QB was back for the KU game and came across this article.

I thought it was a good insight into the view of the CFB/B1G landscape from the disinterested 3rd party perspective of a Rutgers beat writer.

Worth the read imo, but highlights:

I was surprised by the reaction to the Ohio State loss. People were more upset about losing 52-3 to the Buckeyes than Sitkowski almost being broken in half, which is just perplexing.

From my vantage point, it felt like people spent a week on the Internet angrily predicting a blowout loss. Then the blowout loss everyone expected came, and people were shocked and appalled it happened.

Ohio State resides in the nation’s highest echelon. There are only 4-10 programs at that level at any given time. Right now, I would argue it’s Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and the Buckeyes, then everyone else. Auburn and LSU pop in from time to time. Same with Florida State and Oklahoma. And that’s about it, give or take a great year by some other schools here or there.

At this juncture, the only other Big Ten program that I believe has an imminent chance to crack that group is Penn State, given how well James Franklin is recruiting. Nebraska could get back there, but let’s see Scott Frost do it first. As for Michigan, the unspoken issue behind the Jim Harbaugh debate is the realization if he can’t get the Wolverines back to the top of the mountain, maybe they can’t get there anymore.

Bold is mine for hate/schadenfreude reasons. It's not just Buckeye fans asking this question.

The Buckeyes team I saw Saturday was the second-most impressive college football team I’ve ever seen in person (Cam Newton’s Auburn team remains No. 1). Ohio State is that good.

Speaking of composite 247 recruiting rankings he says:
Could Rutgers do better in recruiting? Absolutely. But what is the barometer that should be used?

Rutgers is closer than most realize to joining the Big Ten’s steady second tier. That’s what the goal should be right now, because if you can consistently compete on that level, you put yourself in a position to punch up against the top tier with a chance for success.

Wisconsin was picked by many to reach the College Football Playoff this year. Rutgers’ recruiting, at least by this imperfect but reasonable metric, is closer to the Badgers’ than the Badgers are to Ohio State.
