Drew Henson is sort of a meme sports trivia questions nowadays. The guy who started over Brady at Michigan.

People forget just how good Henson was. He was going to be the 1st pick in the NFL draft had he come back. That draft included Michael Vick and Lamdamien Tomlinson.

Even after flaming out in minor league baseball, years later, Henson was still drafted in the 6th round.

He had everything. Athleticism, personality, looks, golden arm. He was the biggest recruit in the history of the program, imo.

Excuse me for questioning DFBIAs authority but is there any truth to this? I was a little young at the time to remember.

Bonus points for the brutal misspelling of Ladainian Tomlinson

Also their infatuation with the looks of their players/former players continues to be odd and a bit disturbing.

This was before the recruiting services days, but I remember a tremendous amount of hype around him. He was called a "generational" QB. Of course, even most "generational" talents need some development. He was okay/good for them when he played, but didn't exactly light the world on fire. In 3 years he put up...

I also remember him being injured a lot. He would have some games where he looked really good, then some where he was either really average or really bad. I seem to remember them pumping him up as a Heisman candidate going into 2000, but he didn't approach that. He fell well short of the hype.

Yea in that same thread multiple DFBIA compare him to Elway. Which I guess maybe based on hype, but the stats don't check out. The stats, in 2000 when he played most at least, suggest a probably somewhat accurate QB who didn't make a lot of mistakes in a very run oriented offense. Nothing I'd call "generational" or sure fire NFL stud though.

Depending on which items you’re specifically asking about, there are some truths.

He did start over Brady.
He didn’t come back.
He was above average as a football player.
He gave it up to be a career AAA level 3rd baseman who apparently graduated to holding clipboards on Sunday.

Yea I was thinking if he was such a "sure thing" at football, why would be take the much more unsure path and go for baseball.

The DFBIA went full-on tin foil hat saying that Steinbrenner (a Buckeye fan) paid Henson to play baseball for him strictly to keep him off of their football team.

It was the heyday of Steinbrenner's free spending days so there was a seed of truth to it. He paid Henson A LOT to give up football.

Here is the blurb I found:
ESPN.com - Major League Baseball - Henson signs with Yankees for $17M. BRIGHTON, Mich. – Drew Henson went with his first love, baseball. The Michigan quarterback, in line to be the top pick in next year's NFL draft, agreed Saturday to a $17 million, six-year contract with the New York Yankees.

Funny that a 3MM a year contract was big just 20 years ago.

EDIT

Old NYT article giving more context. I like the "massive" label for 17MM in a baseball context.
