Alan Major (Charlotte Head Coach)

Wait they're the Charlotte 49ers? How have I never noticed this? Seems like an odd choice for an east coast team but wikipedia explained it as:

The nickname "49ers" derives from the fact that the university's predecessor -- Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC - established in 1946) was saved from being shut down by the state in 1949 by Bonnie Cone, when the Charlotte Center became Charlotte College. Due to this "49er spirit" that Cone felt embodied the University, referring to the settlers that endured much hardships in traveling across the United States to seek fortune in the California Gold Rush, students of the fledgling UNC Charlotte chose "49ers" as the school's mascot.
Prior to the "49ers" moniker, the athletic teams were known as the "Owls" due to CCUNC's beginnings as a night school.

His degree reads education and Alan Major indeed did study education at Purdue University.

The only difference -- he was preparing for a hardwood classroom.

Major had two choices when he graduated from Manual High School in Indianapolis -- he could go to a Division II school and play basketball or he could go to Purdue and learn basketball.

He chose the latter and now 18 years after receiving both his degree and his real-world education, Major is finally putting his real major to work as the new head coach at Charlotte.

"My original plan was to walk on at Purdue, but that didn't happen," Major said. "My high school coach gave me great advice -- he told me to ask them if there was anything I could do just to be around the program on a daily basis. I ended up with basically a basketball apprenticeship."

“After discussing my health with my family and our Athletic Director Judy Rose,” Major said. “I have decided to take a medical leave of absence. My family has a history of heart and eye issues, and I plan to have procedures done over the next couple of months to address them. I want to thank Judy and her staff, my coaching staff and our players for their support and love during this process. I'm looking forward to getting back to the game. I am very blessed to be at such an incredible University."
