Americans attacked in Beijing

This is tragic, but I think it is misleading to lead with "Americans attacked..." as it seems it was simply "wrong place, wrong time" for a couple that happened to be American. Otherwise is seems to imply it was because they were American that they were killed rather than the most probable reason, they were foreign and probably had money. Not that it makes it any less sad of course.

Honestly, I would be more inclined to believe that they were attacked because they were American. The disdain that people have all over the world for America and her people is deep. They hate us simply for being us.

While I would agree with you, somewhat, on an ordinary day, the information in the article gives a different picture. For example, a Chinese tour guide was also hurt, the attack occurred at a popular tourist site, the Americans were not wearing anything that screamed "America" and it was not an American-exclusive group at the tourist site. Randomness, in my opinion, or possibly aimed at non-Asian visitors in general, although no protest slogans or the like were reported.

My experience from having spent a couple months in China was quite the opposite. We actually joked that China was the last place on earth where people were happy to see Americans, primarily because the US is probably more responsible than any other nation for the improved quality of life for the rapidly emerging middle class there since the opening of China's economy. There were definitely still old school Maoists who clearly looked upon us with scorn, but that was the exception rather than the rule. I found the Chinese to be the most honest, peaceful people I've visited abroad. At times it almost felt like those scenes from National Lampoon's European Vacation where Chevy Chase runs over the British bicyclist and otherwise harms him, and the Brit in turn is goes out of his way to be as nice as possible to the Americans.

Having seen the rough side of Japan, France and few other countries, I have a tendency to lump all countries together when it come to what they think of us.

It is hard not to generalize when presented with those kinds of examples it's true.
