SEC explores launching its own TV network

BATON ROUGE ? Imagine ESPN not over-covering the NFL, not focusing on the NBA and the NHL and focusing on what many believe is the No. 1 college football conference in the nation minus all those self-serving commercials and anchors.

And you might have the "SEC-PN" network, or the Southeastern Conference Entertainment Network.

"No question, there would be football and basketball on it," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said recently at the SEC spring meetings. "I think there's something like 8,720 hours of programming available. Obviously, part of that would have to be significant football and basketball. The other piece that our presidents and chancellors are very interested in is it would create an outlet for non-athletic content from our universities, which have good communication schools. There are a lot of events on our respective campuses that might find their way onto an SEC network."

I'm confused

Game Plan is pretty useless for most/all games. Anything on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 will be national this year. Any other home games will be picked up by Big Ten network and probably won't be on Game Plan.

I'm confused about this statement. If you live in Little Rock, and the Buckeyes are on ABC, but so is Oklahoma, then Gameplan gave you the ability to see the Bucks (instead of the local ABC game showing the Sooners). I'm not sure how that situation has changed. Is ABC not going to have regional telecasts anymore?

The Gameplan is still a must have if you live out of state. I live in Florida and plan on geting it again this year. I will have the BTN on Directv, so I'll be covered.

OK, here's the question I have...will you REALLY be covered with BTN? My understanding is that there will be multiple games covered by BTN at the same time. I don't KNOW that DirecTV will be televising all of them. So it's possible that if two games are on simultaneously, that you might only see, for example, the TSUN vs Crap U game and the Bucks game would not be on in your area. Now, DirecTV MIGHT be televising both games...they certainly have the option to, but I'm not clear on whether they've dedicated the extra bandwidth to televise the extra games that BTN will televise at the same time. Have you confirmed anything?

ABC will still have regional games. However, the Big Ten's new contract with ABC/ESPN states that any games shown on ABC regional will also be shown on ESPN or ESPN2 in those parts of the country that have a different ABC regional game playing.

The BTN has stated they will offer every game to every cable/dish company. It's up to each company to determine which to show. I know last year TWCol would pick up extra ESPN Plus games that were shown at the same time as an OSU ESPN Plus game. They'd usually put them on channel 2.

It should be an interesting situation for the very first week of the season. OSU will be on the BTN at noon and I believe UM/APPL ST will be on the BTN at noon also(IMO, but not announced yet). For Directv this should be no problem(as far as bandwith goes). I have tt Directv and they aren't really sure how these type of things are going to be handled yet. One thing is certain, the Big Ten has a big investment in this network and they are determined on seeing it work. This thing isn't going to be a novelty like ESPNU, it's here to stay. I've been following this closely and will post any new information that I obtain.

Interesting. I guess I'm confused about it (or perhaps just wondering how it will work) but if that's the case it seems like the ESPN networks would be even more flooded than usual with B10 games this year. Sometimes there are 3 regional B10 games (OSU, TSUN, PSU, Wiscy/Iowa/Purdont) I'm just wondering how ESPN will show them all. Now, having said that, in the past ESPN and ESPN2 also showed B10 games that were not ABC regional. So, obviously they would still be showing B10 games, but they might not show as many of the mid-tier B10 games anymore (NW, Minny, Purdont etc) I guess what I'm saying is that it seems like there will be less overall B10 football available without Gameplan. (even knowing that BTN is there). But I'm probably wrong about that.

Cox Cable Vegas re B10 Network

Today, the Cox customer service site responded to me as follows:
We have no immediate plans to launch Big Ten. However, we are constantly evaluating our line-up in an effort to maintain customer satisfaction.
To request the channel be added to our line-up, please complete the
following form which can be found on our website: http: //www.cox.com/support/lasvegas/contact/locations
You will be contacted directly when the channel(s) will be added to our
lineup. We value your feedback and work very hard to offer a variety of
channels to meet the needs of our customers.
Please note that there are many factors we consider when choosing to add
or delete programming. These factors include programming costs,
programming ratings, customer requests and the effect the addition or
subtraction will have on the remaining line-up."

Nothing unexpected there except the link to a form which they imply will help gather evidence of viewer interest. I am assuming Cox Cable overall will make the decision whether to carry the Network rather than individual local outlets, although I am not sure. Cox is very large in the SW plus having some other outlets in other parts of the country.
I figure it can't hurt those of us served by Cox to fill out the simple form and have our interest recorded in their decisional database. The link is for the Vegas outlet, but I feel confident that there are similar viewer interest sites for each of the Cox locales.
If we have a chance for our out of area cable to carry this network, it will be viewer pressure that caused them to carry it.

Also, I cannot but grit my teeth and note that if we had scheduled teams with more drawing power than YSU and Akron for Noon games, ESPN would probably have picked them up. Northwestern, I am not so sure why they would not pick that one up anyway. But those of us not able to access DirecTV or dish are going to miss 1/4 of all Buck games if our carriers will not carry the Network.

Go Bucks!

Weiberg leaving Big 12 for job with Big Ten network

Kevin Weiberg, who has run the Big 12 Conference for nearly nine years and helped oversee college football's Bowl Championship Series and the NCAA's Division I men's basketball tournament, will step down as the league's commissioner in July to move the new Big Ten television network.

"This is about me feeling like nine years in the position is really enough. It's a matter of being interested in a new challenge," he said in making the announcement Thursday.

Weiberg, 50, will become vice president of university planning and development with the Big Ten Network, which is scheduled to launch in August and provide 24-hour, 365-day cable coverage of league games and events and other programming.

Hey, thanks. I've got Cox here in Phoenix and I'll be filling out that form for my area as well. We have a pretty big Buckeye community here so who knows, maybe they'll pick it up.
