BP Vacation Thread: What To Do Where You're Going

If you aren't going down into the Grand Canyon, I would emphasize that the view from the top is very overrated. It is a giant hole in the ground.

If you are just going to drive up to the landmarks and hop out for 20-60 min, I would strongly suggest adding Bryce Canyon and Zion National Forest to your trip.

Together the three make for an interesting blend. The grand Canyon is a massive hole in the ground, Bryce Canyon is a gigantic but smaller gorge with really interesting rock formations and colors, and Zion is a unique drive through the bottom of sharp rock formations. Zion was my favorite of the three, followed by Bryce. I did not go down into the Grand Canyon which naturally would be a totally different experience.

Also try to rent a car with a sunroof or better yet a convertible to fully enjoy Zion.

+1... I totally agree... the grand canyon is over rated, if you want to see something neat do the "loop" and visit canon lands, Bryce, Zion, and Arches... I lived out there for two summers during undergrad as a white water rafting guide (great summer job for a college student btw). We visited all the national parks when we could snag a couple consecutive days off. Just an FYI, you can ski the top half of Arapahoe Basin until early July (there is a nice 4th of July party on the mountain as well). Breckenridge is a nice town that is close enough to drive up to A-Basin (note, there isn't anything around A-Basin so don't bother staying there)... with that said I was in Breck. last summer and that small town has really grown up!! I kind of liked it when it was a sleepy little town without all the tourists.

Any of you guys done a couples trip to the Caribbean? I have no clue what I'm doing. Looking to leave in late July or early August, and go for around 5 days.

General price range leaving from Columbus? Favorite island to stay? Things to look out for?

TIA.

Been to most of the islands (both staying on resorts and visiting for the day via a cruise ship)... what questions do you have? Do you want phoenix type (dry sandy) or lush (tropical)? Are you concerned with hurricanes during that time period or not (I don't particularly care about them, however many folks are scared to death of them and would want an island that is out of the normal path since that is "in season")... Do you just want to chill, is access to a casino important (some have them others don't), do you want an all inclusive or is a regular resort ok, are you trying to go on the cheap or have a nice luxury experience (btw sju is the cheap way to go... just saying')... I've spent two weeks (sometimes more) down there for the last decade plus, fire away with any questions you have...

Don't eat meat so this was not a problem for me.

Paris was actually nice and I enjoyed it. We didn't spend a lot of time there on the five day weekend but we toured the city and ate some good food. Did a bus tour and walked around different things we wanted to see. I liked it enough to plan another visit when my children are older. I'd like to spend two or three weeks there in the future.

Also went to Disney Paris. Wasn't really our thing. It was midterm for France and England and we didn't know. There were ridiculous lines everywhere.
My wife was all in and all about being at a Disney park until the Disney's hotels dinner. They charged us 30 Euro per adult, drinks were not included. Kids were cheaper but we still paid 96 Euro for dinner. The buffet was nothing but [Mark May]ty army quality food. My wife is cheap and after that buffet she became the anti-Disney.

As long as you visit during non peak times it is a great city to visit. You should take the kids to Edinburgh... great, under the radar city. You can take the train down to York and the kids can check out the shambles and the British National Train museum. Edinburgh made it through the war (WWII) unscathed, there's a lot of history in that town along with castles, palaces, museums, shopping, good restaurants, and friendly people... The wisky (scotch) isn't bad either ... If the kids are old enough to golf, you can take them on a day trip up to St. Andrews as well (a little over an hour drive and the birth place of golf and a small but fun town to boot)...

Here is a real challenge for everyone. Will be at a conference in Detroit for four days in the middle of April. Suggestions?

In the first weekend in April we booked a 4 day to Garmisch Germany. We've been there before and have seen Neuschwanstein Castle and a couple of the local attractions. This time we are going to hike up the mountains more and also take a trip over to Berchtesgaden Germany where Hitler had the infamous Eagles Nest. Going to tour that and I want to see St Bartholomew's church and see what is open around the Konigssee.
