Scout's Take: Whose Draft Stock is Up?

sportsillustrated.com tourney blog, by Luke Winn

The Blog named its All-Second Weekend Team on Tuesday, and today turns to its most trusted NBA scout... Which players, our scout was asked, improved their draft stock the most over the course of the NCAA tournament?

Here were his picks, followed by commentary:

Greg Oden, C, Ohio State (Fr., projected for '07 draft)

Scout's Take: "I know we're talking about 'moving up,' and Oden can't really go much higher, but here's what's been reinforced: All the talk about taking [Kevin] Durant at No. 1 is ridiculous...

Not that Oden isn't used to the big stage. Oden has been the center of attention since his high school career when people first noticed that he wasn't just big, but also athletic, talented, and personable. He was the ideal candidate for becoming a basketball super-star, and without really trying, became one.

The geek shall inherit his worth
Until then and likely thereafter, Greg Oden is content living with a little 'Urkel' inside

?I love to go out, but I don?t want to get in trouble,? Oden said. ?I don?t want to do anything to jeopardize this university or this team. I know it?s not time for me to go out or do anything. If I could go out, I would, because I love to be around people. I have dance moves, maybe not ?Dancing with the Stars? good, but I?m decent. ?But I knew we had chance to go to the Final Four, which a lot of teams can?t do, and I?m not going to do anything to mess that up.?

Behind the scenes with hero in scarlet, gray

Glimpses of Greg Oden

Cartoons, films, lots of sleep are musts for OSU's 7-footer

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

ATLANTA - If freshman Greg Oden decides to turn pro after this season, and Saturday night (or Monday) is his final game in an Ohio State uniform, the All-American center still left a mark on the program.
His witty, off-the-court moments
were just as memorable as his two-
handed dunks, blocked shots and
primal screams. Here is a behind-
the-scenes look at Oden from what
could be his last two months in
scarlet and gray.

Center of attention

Oden-mania grips Final Four; young center unfazed

p1.oden.getty.jpg

Greg Oden attracts a crowd wherever he goes.

ATLANTA -- At 1:30 p.m. Friday, the doors to Ohio State's Georgia Dome locker room opened, and a not-so-small army of reporters and cameramen immediately bolted to the near-right corner to surround a particular 7-foot center. At that point, mind you, I could not have told you for certain that the subject at the center of this paparazzi was in fact Greg Oden, because, unfortunately, I was unfortunately stuck in about the eighth row of the circle.

You know, this is one of the best Buckeye basketball moments in history let alone my lifetime and I'm extremely excited. On the other hand as I'm typing this this morning some realization is starting to dawn on me and I'm getting a little sad. Today could be the last day Greg Oden ever wears a Buckeye basketball uniform.:(

I'm as grateful as anyone but I'm also selfish as hell because I want him back next season. Greg is one of the greatest people the Ohio State University has ever been affiliated with, and thats saying a great deal.

Lets forget about how good he is at basketball for a moment. Greg has all the charisma and star power that you'd want in your President. Greg is humble, funny and as honest a human being as I've ever seen in my life. Greg is going to have a unique opportunity not afforded many people in the history of the world let alone in the basketball arena. Many people through history have had many opportunities at fame and power but lacked the responsibility and courage to actually make a difference. Greg will make millions, absolute no doubter there. Lots of people make millions and become nothing other than yesterday's news. Greg Oden as a human being is worth more than an NBA salary can pay him. Greg has an idea of what kind of person he is and wants to be and actually has the attitude to use his persona to positively affect other people. Rare commodity. I'm quite sure if Greg ever decided he wanted to make a change in our society he would get the backing by his peers and others and he could actually do it.

We've only been able to watch Greg Oden here for less than a year and already he's an icon in Buckeye annals. If today is Greg Odens last basketball game or even on Monday, I for one will not let it go past without screaming my head off for his and this teams success.

Kick some ass today Greg!

And forever.......GO BUCKS!!!!!!!

Ohio State notebook
Fans take fancy to Oden at practice

Saturday, March 31, 2007 3:38 AM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

ATLANTA -- Sometimes Greg Oden is the sideshow, sometimes he is the main event.

He was a little of both yesterday when the 7-foot center and his teammates took the floor for a public practice in the Georgia Dome.
"Check that guy's ID; that guy is 45," a fan's voice boomed.
As Oden and his teammates warmed up with some shots, another fan shouted: "Hey, Oden. That was a foul!"
Still another, apparently tired of watching the Buckeyes work on fundamentals, yelled: "We didn't come here to see that. Dunk it, Oden. Dunk it!"
And so it went through the one-hour session in front of a crowd of several thousand. When it was over, though, Oden didn't sprint for the exit.
He signed autographs, even as an NCAA escort repeatedly tugged at his arm and told him he had to go. Oden finally did, but not until he capped his move down the retaining rail by signing a pair of scarlet-and-gray sneakers.

NBA beckons, but Oden should read Duncan's tale

ATLANTA -- Greg Oden isn't ready for the NBA. You know it. He knows it. The team that selects him No. 1 in this year's draft knows it.

But he'll ditch Ohio State after just his freshman season because you'd have to be a bona fide basketball moron to turn down the chance to be the first pick, right? All that money. All those great players in "the league." All those draft night photo ops with Commissioner Stern as you wear, say, that dumb looking $20 Memphis Grizzlies' ball cap with your $2,000 suit. And did I mention all that money?

Very good read IMO

I would LOVE to see Oden make that monster dunk over Noah in the championship game.

It would forever be down as one of the greatest dunks in basketball history.

Hell, if this one hit, it might've made some top 10 lists...
