THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State junior Jantel Lavender had finished her first postseason basketball workout yesterday when she learned that she had been voted a first-team All-America by the Associated Press.

"It's a great honor," Lavender said. "It shows that it pays off if you work hard, do what you need to do and never give up on yourself."

Lavender led the Buckeyes to a sixth consecutive Big Ten championship and a program-best 31 wins. She averaged 21.4 points and 10.3 rebounds and was named the conference player of the year for the third time.

Cleveland native Jantel Lavender in her senior season is expected to be exactly what she was during her first three seasons at Ohio State - the best player in the Big Ten.

The Central Catholic grad was the Big Ten Player of the Year as a freshman, sophomore and junior and was picked as the conference's preseason player of the year by both the media and the coaches, it was announced during the Big Ten basketball meetings today.

Ohio State was also announced as the conference favorite, picked to win a seventh straight Big Ten title. Iowa was picked to finish second by both the coaches and the media.

Katie Smith was the first female Buckeye athlete to have her number retired. If Lavender can win another Big Ten POY award, and be picked to her second AP All-American team, she may become the second female to get a number retired.

Senior Jantel Lavender of Ohio State was named yesterday to the Associated Press' women's basketball preseason All-America team.

Lavender averaged 21.4 points and 10.3 rebounds in helping Ohio State to a 31-5 record and another Big Ten title. It's the second straight season that Lavender was honored as a preseason All-American.

Lavender was joined on the preseason squad by Connecticut's Maya Moore, Baylor's Brittney Griner, Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Oklahoma's Danielle Robinson.

Samantha Prahalis, an Ohio State junior, was among other players receiving votes from a national media panel.

Moore, a UConn senior, became the second player to be a two-time unanimous choice on the preseason All-America team, receiving all 40 votes.

Agreed. Most likely a formality at this point. Jantel's one of the greatest women's basketball players to play here, without question.

No "may" or "most likely" here. Even if she didn't win her fourth conference POY, she'd rate getting her number retired, but being conference POY all four years is an accomplishment that could never been beaten.

In her first three seasons at Ohio State, Jantel Lavender has accomplished almost everything one could expect from the Cleveland-native center.

But OSU coach Jim Foster thinks her career is yet to be defined.

"I think Jantel's career will be measured by championships more so than points scored," Foster said.

Postseason success is the biggest element missing from Lavender's resume. In Lavender's time at OSU, only once has her team advanced past the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"We haven't had the postseason run that we need to," Lavender said. "Our team just has to be more strong and more together and, you know, more cohesive, for us to go far."

Lavender enters the 2010-11 season as one of the most decorated players in college basketball. She was selected to the Associated Press Preseason All-American team and the watch list for the Wooden Award, which is awarded to the best male and female athletes in college basketball.

She was also named the Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year. Should Lavender win her fourth straight Big Ten Player of the Year award after the season, she would be the first in conference history to do so.

Lavender said she has her sights set beyond just earning all-conference honors.

"The goal is to be a national player of the year," Lavender said.

She has all the tools to earn that honor. In her first three seasons at OSU, Lavender has averaged 20 points and 10.3 rebounds per game and is 534 points shy of Katie Smith's OSU career scoring record, as well as 63 rebounds short of Tracey Hall's OSU career rebounding record.

Lavender said individual accomplishments come second to team goals.

"If my team needs me to get 30, or if my team needs me to get 18 points and 25 rebounds, then that's what I'm trying to do," she said.

Lavender is already a two-time All-American. Didn't Tracie Hall number get retired last season??

Congrats to Jantel on becoming tOSU's career scoring leader, with 2,587 points (breaking the 2,578 at tOSU scored by 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Smith).

Jantel also set an NCAA women's record with her 126th straight game scoring in double-digits.

The record for most non-consecutive double-digit scoring games is 137 (in 141 games) by Maya Moore, now a senior at UConn.
