Roby's OSU career going according to plan

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Bradley Roby came to Ohio State with a specific plan mapped out.

Redshirt the first year, in part because the Buckeyes had two senior starters returning at cornerback (Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence). Check.

Earn a starting job as a redshirt freshman and keep it throughout Year 2 in the program. Check.

Cover the Big Ten's best wide receivers -- including four selected in last month's NFL draft -- both in games and in Buckeyes practices. Check.

"That's what I put all my efforts into," Roby told ESPN.com, "and I'm glad it came to fruition."

One item not included on Roby's plan was upset a future first-round pick with both skills and trash talk. But he succeeded in doing so during Ohio State's victory at Illinois in October. Roby held Illini star receiver A.J. Jenkins to 80 yards and no touchdowns -- Jenkins came in averaging 135.8 yards and 1.2 touchdowns per game. Roby also set up Ohio State's first touchdown with a 36-yard interception return.

Roby had sparked some fireworks earlier in the week when he described Jenkins as "decent, but he's nothing special, really." Jenkins had proclaimed himself the Big Ten's top receiver earlier in the season, and he had been backing it up. Roby now says the media spun his comments "out of control" but admits his words added excitement to the game.

The Buckeyes cornerback doesn't hide the fact he likes to talk trash during games, but most of his targets don't return fire. Jenkins did.

"I guess that's because I got in his head," Roby said. "Because if they're not responding to you, most likely they?re trying to ignore you. But if they're yelling back at you, it means you're getting to them. So keep doing it."

* Roby couldn't give an update on Miller's passing because "he never throws to my side of the field."
* Roby said he has been one of the No. 1 kick return guys this offseason and has petitioned to play some offense.
* Roby was clocked at 4.31 in the 40 twice this summer. Down from a previous best of 4.4 last summer despite being 5lbs heavier.

Gotta love the quote about Miller never passing to his side of the field. And 4.31 is absolutely flying.

We have all speculated about his potential- but this seems to be one of those outstanding stories that is right on target. I hope that all the young guys learn a lot from him this year and are ready to step in sooner rather than later.

TWO-WAY STAR? Bradley Roby insists he does not read the preseason publications touting him as the Buckeyes' next shutdown cornerback.

"But whatever they're saying, that's exactly what I believe," the sophomore said with a smile. "And I was the first one to believe that. Now y'all are seeing it."

How confident is Roby?

He wants to be the Buckeyes' next two-way star (Think Chris Gamble). Roby hopes to try his hand at receiver too and has spent the summer lobbying his coaches for the chance.

"One of these days," he said. "They're going to put me on the other side."

Roby's boldness is not unfounded. He was the team's top corner last year, ran the 40-yard dash in a team-best 4.31 seconds, and showed his receiving abilities when he intercepted a deep sideline pass from quarterback Braxton Miller late in Tuesday's practice.

But his coaches are less enthused by the idea.

"That's the confidence I'm talking about. I love that in him," co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said. "Let's be great at one thing before we become a jack of all trades and a master of none."

For example, a few years ago, he first committed to Vanderbilt, where he intended to become the next great wide receiver in college football. He changed his mind and signed with Ohio State as a cornerback, but a receiver?s confidence still glows inside.

?I can still be that, actually,? Roby, a sophomore from Suwanee, Ga., said the other day. ?I always told the coaches I can play receiver, so one of these days they?re going to put me on the other side, so ??

No one admitted to any such plans in the near future. But first-year OSU coach Urban Meyer said in the spring he was seeking a receiver with the ?wow? factor. And with 4.31-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Roby is officially the fastest player on the team, so ?

?I?m on kickoff return now ? so I just need the ball in my hands, really,? Roby said.

Kickoff returns and making interceptions will have to satisfy his pigskin appetite for now, Meyer and defensive coordinator Luke Fickell indicated, even as Roby spoke of perhaps playing something like the three-way role Chris Gamble played on the 2002 OSU national title team.

An excellent case could be made that the defensive line at Ohio State is the strongest position on the team. An argument could also be heard that Braxton Miller, the Buckeyes' dynamic QB, deserves that accolade. But one position that hasn't gotten as much notoriety since Urban Meyer installed his spread offense was the secondary.

The Buckeyes return all four starters to the secondary that allowed just 182 yards through the air, the 14th-best mark in the country. The team's top cover corner last year was Bradley Roby, a redshirt freshman last season who started all 13 games.

Roby tied for the team lead with three interceptions and tied for ninth in the conference with nine passes defensed.

One of Urban Meyer's biggest concerns regarding Roby was that he wasn't getting enough work during spring drills.

?I think he gets bored,? Urban Meyer said to Tim May of The Columbus Dispatch during training camp. ?I think he's really talented and in the spring, he didn't get challenged. We didn't have time to challenge him because we were either getting sacked ? we weren't very good on offense.?

The Buckeyes' top-three returning receivers each recorded just 14 catches last season. Naturally, Roby, who is the fastest player on the team (4.31 in the 40-yard dash), wanted to play receiver.

?I always told the coaches I can play receiver, so one of these days they're going to put me on the other side,? Roby said. Roby wants to be reminiscent of the former Ohio State three-way athlete Chris Gamble, who starred on the 2002 National Championship team.

As just a sophomore, Roby is already fielding kickoffs and hounding receivers in the secondary, but defensive coordinator Luke Fickell isn't sure he wants to stretch Roby too thin.

?That's the confidence thing I'm talking about, you love guys like that,? Fickell said, the interim head coach last season for Ohio State. ?But let's be great at one thing before we become a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none.?

Roby, formerly No. 25, asked Urban Meyer to wear the No. 1 jersey earlier this offseason and Meyer granted that request just before training camp. ?[Meyer] called me, he said, ?I can see greatness in you, so here goes. Make sure you don't slip up or anything.?

Hands team: Bradley Roby might eventually become an option in the return game.

But without much experience handling the football in practice, Meyer is leaving those duties to somebody more used to touching it at this point.

That leaves the job returning punts and kickoffs that might ultimately be filled by injured running back Jordan Hall to another offensive player, with receiver Corey "Philly" Brown earning that right this weekend.

"I think (Roby) will at some point, it?s just that he doesn?t carry a ball very often in practice," Meyer said. "So we?re going to work his way in there hopefully, but he?s worked his tail off and at some point he?ll be back there."
