CB Travis Howard (Official Thread)

I wander if Doran Grant will be the other starting corner by the end of the year? Howard has proved to be the 1 starter but who will the other one be?

Dominic Clarke, who did an excellent job when forced into duty during the Sugar Bowl.

Dionte Allen, the Florida State transfer who has been making some noise this spring.

Bradley Roby, who is one of the most mentioned young players on the team.

I find it hard to imagine an incoming freshman would pass up any of those players in the fall or during the season.

Clarke, Roby & Allen have all been excellent this spring, and Tanner/Cash were both very disruptive and instinctive in Saturday'scrimmage.

Hopefully Doran can redshirt and get some separation from his predecessors.

That's true, it will be hard but you'll see Grant on special teams his first year for sure. Don't be surprised if he gets PT, the kids is really good. He won't be a redshirt, I guarantee that. He is playing in the North/South game tomorrow.

Grant is definitely good enough to see limited duty and special teams, I just hope they can avoid it.

Cash, Tanner, Grant and others are all big assets on special teams, not to mention returning most of the coverage unit personnel.

I'm eager to see him tomorrow at 4 pm in the shoe. For those who can't make it, the game is tape delayed on STO.

New Blood: Travis Howard
By Luke - 22 May 2011

Travis Howard looks to improve upon a late break out end of the 2010 season and make his mark on the OSU program as the Buckeyes' next elite corner.

Wax. Rinse. Repeat.

Ohio State will need to replace 10 starters this year and that's not including the five contributors that will be out for the first five games of the season. As such, we'll be profiling several of the potential new contributors over the coming weeks. Previously: Ken Guiton, Marcus Hall, Jack Mewhort.
Travis Howard POS # HT/WT YEAR HOMETOWN
CB 7 6-0/190 Junior (RS) Miami, Florida

The beginning of the narrative that brought Travis Howard from the sun-kissed confines of Miami, Florida to Columbus, Ohio arise from two contrasting cliche observations of soapbox recruiting analysts a plenty in the Jim Tressel-era. Scout listed Howard as but the 24th best cornerback in the class of 2008 and graded him out as but a 3-star overall. Queue the myopic "Jim Tressel needs to be bringing in more 4 and 5 star national guys, just like the SEC schools do." Tthe same critics that are of course apropos of nothing with respect to Tressel's track record with turning 3-star after thoughts from the ilk of James Laurinaitis, A.J. Hawk, and Malcolm Jenkins into first and second round NFL Draft picks. Rivals was a bit more forgiving, slotting Howard as their 19th best and giving him a late bump to 4-stars overall. On the flip side, Howard fit perfectly into the "let's bring in some boys from the ol' speed state!" mantra sure to follow the same dead horse beaten "floppy belly" v "fleet of foot skinny o-linemen" alternating memes that controlled the idle chatter on message boards in years past.

I have been a little underwhelmed with Howard's play thus far. I heard all summer about how awesome his cover skills are but he doesn't seem to be in good position consistently and to be honest, I think Clarke has looked like the better player and bigger playmaker.

This was said in Roby's thread, but I felt awkward responding there.

I agree. Yesterdays performance was very underwhelming. He consistently jumped the double move, and didn't wrap up when tackling. Also, shedding the WR to get up field to help support the run seemed to be a problem.

I hope Travis turns it around and starts playing better.

Most concerning in my eyes is that he simply doesn't look fluid at all. He looks timid and he never seems to be swarming like Malcolm Jenkins, Dom Clarke, etc.
His main talent is supposed to be his shut down ability. I haven't seen that yet.

He looked lost to me...He didn't know where the ball was on more than a few plays he was defending. He made no play on the TD catch and was totally out of position on the long pass completion that led to the FG.
