CCS Lay Off 113 Teachers

I am certified to teach grades 4-9, science and language arts. I actually do not have a job. CCS announced this fall they would be closing 6-9 schools. My school was on the list. Through internal job postings I was able to find another job within CCS. Yesterday, I was notified that my position I accepted was back up on the postings and my contract would be suspended.

They based the lay offs on seniority and certifications. So, teachers with more experience who could not get the job that was offered to me in the first place, now have another shot at it. I guess that is what the union does, protects the older, less effective teachers.

Looks like there is a real possibility of the majority of the teachers getting recalled in the coming months. I am looking outside of the school district, but it is reassuring to hear that.

On the positive side, I will get free college classes this summer and unemployment on top of my salary that is owed to me. Just need to find another job.

I don't think that's the way it's supposed to work, actually.

I am missing out on summer extended contracts because of my lay off. The money I could have been making with the extended contracts will be supplemented with unemployment. I chose the 26 vs. the 21 pay plan. My work is done by the summer, I just wanted to have a pay check year round.
