Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

Weis is still unproven as a college football head coach. What we do know, is that he has not been able to win the big games yet, but that he recruits and talks a mean game.

How long he will be able to live on his experiences as an assistant coach in the NFL also remains unclear.

This year is a bit of a bellweather year for Chuck. Most of the players on the field will be his recruits. Like the Buckeyes, the QB situation is a real question mark. Unlike the Buckeyes, the defense looks to have continued problems, perhaps the worst so far. The Big Ten teams that they are playing also are coming off a run of down years. TSUN and Penn State look good. MSU under Dantonio will be tougher. USC is an almost certain loss and a couple of close ones upfront in the schedule against good but not great teams could go against Weis if the QB situation doesn't get traction fast.

There is a very real possibility that ND lose four or more games this year. If so, look for the recruiting skills to diminish and for his halo to disappear in the press as writers look for excuses to explain their liplock on his derrier since he arrived at ND.

I think this is going to be a pivotal year for Weis. Hes coming in with a fresh, inexperience, yet talented offense. They're replacing some of the defense, and have switched to a tough, new defensive coordinator. This certainly isn't going to be a great year with all the inexperience on the field. The key for Weis is to produce with the raw talent they're getting in now. If they can pull out a decent record from this season, then I would have to say hes a good coach and theres better things to come in the future. Recruiting has turned around since he was hired, and if he can make them produce like he did the benchwarmers his first two years, ND will put up a fight against elite teams.

ND will put up a fight against elite teams.

Not to be a jerk, but isn't it about time that ND wins these elite games? If you want a seat at the big table, it's time to earn your spot. Hiring a new DC will answer the real question - Is Charles a great head coach or a great offensive mind? If ND's defense shows a semblance of improvement, it buys some time. If not.... well, as others have said, it's a pivotal year for CW.

Well I think that might be where a lot of ND fans heads are at this point in time. I don't think they even expect to win the really big games. They just want to be competitive. See the biggest "win" in recent ND history: a 34-31 loss to USC in 2005. This is the game that a lot of fans point to as the reason that ND is "back."

So Davie & Willingham were good coaches?A winning record does not cut it at the elite schools like ND, as seen by the past two firings.
Which was pretty absurd, considering their closest thing to a quality win (at the time) was a loss. 1) Beat a marquee team (not 5-loss UM, 4-loss PSU)
2) Not get crushed in BCS bowl games

Charlie's best accomplishment was taking ND to the wire (though Fresno State almost pulled it off too). Since then, he's been crushed by the 4 elite teams they have played (12-1 OSU, 11-2 UM, 11-2 USC & LSU).
I think Davie and Willingham were pretty good coaches. If they weren't they wouldn't have even been considered for the job.
And True , a wining record doesn't cut it at Elite schools . Remember Earl?
Do you consider Earl a good Coach. I think he was a helluva coach. And no I'm not comparing Earl to Weis. :tongue2:
Now back to Weis. Now you may think he has something to prove to be a "good coach" I think he has already done that. So does ND or they wouldn't have extended him as they did.
Now Then if Weis wants to be a "Great Coach" , he has to accomplish what you outlined in 4 and 5.
Over all I think Weis hasn't done too badly in his first few years. He has turned the program around even though as several on here have noted that he now will be playing with his recruits and must do well with them.
Glory is a fleeting thing, especially in the premier programs, ( Cooper).
So Weis still does have to achieve in order to stay. Even if he does the jury is out as to whether or not he will be the next Knute Rockne, which he will never do IMO but he still can be a great coach.
People can call him fat or ugly or stupid or even a bad coach but he is good enough of a coach to have his ten million and to have gotten the Head coaching job at ND and that my friend is no meant feat.
Thank you for your rapt attention .

That's way too simplified. The rest of us live in the real world.
hey! I can live with that. One question though. Is your world the real one according to Garp?
or is mine?
Is real the fantasy or is the internet the real real?
Or Am I just fantasizing all of this.:slappy:

Some of you act as thugh Charlie has been at ND forever! It has been 2 years! Just 2 years of not winning a big game. Charlie's players will be freshman/sophomores this year and expecting great things from them is very unrealistic. It may very well be a tough year but we all knew it would be, but with the way Charlie has/is recruiting the big wins and great seasons are just around the corner.

What's amazing is that ND can basically sleepwalk into 2-straight BCS bowl games without winning a big game.

I hate to make the comparison, but I liken Weis to Cooper. Coop good teams with lotsa talent and was a great coach (two runner-up finishes in the 90's with a Heisman trophy winner will see to that greatness), but couldn't win the big game (in a bowl game, against scUM). We all know what happend to Cooper because of that. If Charlie keeps it up, we can expect the same outcome here. The alumni will be calling for his head the same way they were calling for Willingham's if he can't win those big games.

This is Notre Dame we're talking about. Big things aren't expected now... they were expected yesterday. Charlie's a little bit behind not winning a big game in his first two years as head coach.

In 2 years Bob Stoops went from a DC at Florida to a NC head coach at Oklahoma. In 2 years JT went from a mere Div 1-AA head coach to a NC head coach who also beat the archrival 2 out of 2. In 2 years Urban took a midmarket team to a BCS bowl win, and in 2 years Urban won a NC at Florida. Are you telling me that Charlie the Great gets a free pass because of his inate greatness?
excellent post

Earl was a great coach for getting the most out of his players. He learned that from Woody.
Cooper was a good coach, not a great one. His forte was in the asst's he hired.
Weis is a good coach, not a great one.
I think Weis is a like Cooper, a better recruiter than a hands on coach.
Stoops is a very good coach.
JT is a great coach. so far
It isn't the time on the job that makes a coach good or great it 's what they do as a coach while on the job.
If Weis were to leave ND today he would be remembered for starting the turn around and IMO that makes him a good coach.

Oh My!

Charlie isn't going to be in South Bend much longer. I truly believe this is just a pitt spot for him on his way to the NFL. I think the moment he wins ND a BCS Bowl (HAHA, ND winning a bowl game!?!?! just got that joke!) he's outta there for an NFL job.
