DB Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown (DB Coach Slippery Rock Univ.)

Tressel said he also expects to have defensive back Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown back at full strength for the fall, but that prognosis might be a little on the optimistic side. The redshirt sophomore out of Monroeville suffered a torn ACL in Ohio State?s 49-0 win over Purdue last October.

He was expected to miss the rest of the season and the spring, but bad knee injuries can often take a year to fully recover.

Standing out on defense
One of the highlights of Tuesday’s practice came during goal-line drills, when rising redshirt senior safety Corey “Pittsburgh” Brown stuffed rising sophomore running back Bri’onte Dunn just outside of the end zone on a simulated fourth-down situation.

Meyer said he hopes Brown develops into “a Reid Fragel,” an example Meyer has used on multiple occasions this year to describe players who he hopes will emerge to have breakout seasons.

“I’m hoping he’s going to step it up,” Meyer said of Brown. “He hasn’t done a whole lot around here. He’s a nice kid with some talent.”

Orhian Johnson’s departure following his senior season leaves an opening for playing time in the secondary behind the Buckeyes’ two starting safeties, rising redshirt senior C.J. Barnett and rising senior Christian Bryant. Brown, however, said he is trying not to get too caught up in worrying about his playing time next season.

“I’m trying to do everything I can possible,” Brown said. “I just want to work hard … I just want to do whatever I can for the team.”

While Brown impressed Meyer on Tuesday, safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers said Brown still has a long way to go in his development.

“I think he’s got to step out of his comfort zone, and that’s what we’re trying to push him to do,” Withers said. “I don’t think he had a very good scrimmage last Saturday.”

Ohio State football notebook: Brown knows he needs to stand out at safety
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch?Wednesday March 27, 2013

After Ohio State had a scrimmage on Saturday, assistant coach Everett Withers sent a text message to safety Corey Brown.

It wasn?t a congratulatory one.

?I said, ?Hey, man, you?ve got to play better. I recruited real well at this position,? ? Withers said. ?I?m real honest with them. I think he understands the urgency. I think he wants to be a valuable member of this football team.?

As Brown knows, it?s now or never. He will be a senior in the fall, and competition will be stiff for playing time. In addition to starting safeties Christian Bryant and C.J. Barnett, the Buckeyes have Withers? star recruit, Vonn Bell, arriving.

Brown appeared to take Withers? text in the way intended.

?Just motivation,? he said. ?I know I?ve got to come out here every day and work extremely hard.?

After yesterday?s practice, coach Urban Meyer singled out Brown for praise. In a short-yardage drill, Brown stuffed running back Bri?onte Dunn on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

?I?m hoping he?s our Reid Fragel,? Meyer said, referring to the offensive tackle who blossomed as a senior in 2012 after an undistinguished career as an underclassman. ?He hasn?t done a whole lot around here. He?s a nice kid with some talent. It?s time.?

Brown has added almost 15 pounds since last season and now weighs about 205 pounds. Brown is soft-spoken and reserved. Withers would like to see more fire.

?I want him to be a little more vocal and outgoing,? he said. ?He has to step out of his comfort zone a little bit, and that?s what we?re trying to push him to do.?

Time for OSU?s Brown to be ?Pittsburgh,? not ?the other?

By LEE HUDNELL

COLUMBUS ? When referring to Ohio State football player Corey Brown, you usually have to denote which one you are speaking of. There is wide receiver Corey Brown, who is known as ?Philly.? And there is the defensive back Corey Brown, known as ?Pittsburgh.? Can you guess where they are from?

?Philly? Brown, a senior, has become a star for the Buckeyes ? a ?wow factor player? for the Ohio State offense, according to head coach Urban Meyer ? leading the team in receptions and receiving yards in 2012 with 60 grabs for 669 yards.

?Pittsburgh? Brown, a fifth-year senior, has been relatively quiet during his career with the Buckeyes, recording just 26 tackles ? with no interceptions, pass breakups or passes defended ? in 29 total games played.

Unfortunately for the former blue-chip recruit from western Pennsylvania, he has gone from ?Pittsburgh? Brown to ?the other? Brown.

This season will be his final one as a Buckeye, and the coaching staff is pushing him to become the player he was expected to be when he arrived on campus back in 2009. Following Saturday?s scrimmage ? where Brown didn?t perform to expectations ? assistant head coach and Co-defensive coordinator, Everett Withers, told him via text message that it?s time to step up, because he has recruited some star recruits (most notably, Vonn Bell) who will take his job if he doesn?t elevate his game. ?I said, ?Hey, man, you?ve got to play better. I recruited real well at this position,?? Withers said. ?I?m real honest with them. I think he understands the urgency. I think he wants to be a valuable member of this football team.?

Brown has taken the coach?s criticism as constructive, not destructive.

?It?s motivation,? Brown said following practice Tuesday. ?I know I?ve got to come out here every day and work extremely hard.?
