DB Donald Washington III (Official Thread)

Poster on Bucknuts Recruiting board had this to say about Washington http://mb12.scout.com/fohiostatefrm2.showMessage?topicID=16149.topic:

FYI - Donald dominated the Indiana all-star game yesterday with 2 TD's and was named game MVP.

I am still curious how so many teams missed on this kid. He seems like a super athlete that can excel at multiple positions. I mean, OSU basically just came in the few weeks before signing day and got him.

OSU had known about Donald since his excellent performance at the Columbus Nike combine in April of 2004. I believe that DW3 held off committing to another school because he felt that an OSU offer was a real possibility, and it did come late in the game; same goes for Robiskie.

North-South All-Star Classic
Lightning creates storm at end
Game is halted with 1:03 left, 7 seconds after North all-stars clinch it with TD run.

The North-South All-Star Classic is supposed to be an entertaining exhibition game for the best players in the state as they end their high school football careers.

After Saturday's game was called because of lightning with 1:03 left, giving the North a 17-14 victory at North Central High School, the South's players looked more like they had just lost the state championship.

"My high school career hasn't ended," said Franklin Central's Donald Washington III, an Ohio State recruit who played for the South and was named the game's MVP. "I've still got a minute left in my high school career."

The North's Matt Michuda scored on a 2-yard run with 1:10 left to put the North on top 17-14.

The South had possession on its 29-yard line when a massive clap of thunder and bolt of lightning struck.

"I'm frustrated," South coach Mark Haste said. "I'm very frustrated.

"Like I told the kids, if this is the worst thing that ever happens in your life, then you're very successful. When you've got lightning, you've got no control over that. We're talking life or death. Nobody could live with it if something happened."

North coach Steve Stirn agreed with the decision to call the game and not just suspend play.

"The conditions were just getting worse," Stirn said. "To put them back on for one minute just wouldn't have been worth the risk."

The South led 7-3 at halftime after Evansville Harrison graduate and future Purdue Boilermaker Joey Elliott hit Washington with a 25-yard pass in the end zone. Fort Wayne Snider's Jon Rocholl hit a 42-yard field goal for the North in the first quarter.

North quarterback Dustin Sherer, from Hamilton Heights, fumbled twice and threw an interception in the first half.

The North regained the lead in the third quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Heritage (Monroeville)'s Doug Wasylk, the North's Player of the Game. Wasylk fumbled, but officials said he was in the end zone before the ball came loose.

Running back Jordan Swain set up the play with back-to-back runs of 17 and 12 yards.

"You come into (last) Sunday with some thoughts about kids and you have an idea what you think you can expect from them," Stirn said about the start of practices. "Sunday and Monday we looked at (Swain) and just saw such explosion. He has the best burst of any guy out of the backfield. As you looked at the game, he just looks so much faster than everyone else."

With 30 seconds to go in the third quarter, the South regained the lead when Elliott and Washington connected again in the end zone, this time with a 23-yard pass that Washington caught leaping above the North defenders.

"It's the same thing we were doing all week," Washington said of his rapport with Elliott. "We just knew how to connect."

Washington ended up with three receptions for 64 yards. Elliott was 9-of-18 for 154 yards.

"It's so frustrating because with the time we had, I really think we were going to put it in," Washington said.

Old article overlooked from the Indy Star:
County Male Athletes of the Year 3-sport stars Werner, Washington are tough acts to follow

By Pat McKee

The three-sport star.

Although sometimes a cliche as a description, the label truly fits Franklin Central's Donald Washington III and Roncalli's Jason Werner. They have been selected The Star's Marion County Male Athletes of the Year, the fifth time in 56 years co-winners have been honored among county boys.

Washington and Werner have excelled in football, basketball and track and field. And both have accepted football scholarships to Big Ten programs -- Washington to Ohio State and Werner to Purdue.

"This well-rounded young man has many characteristics that make him outstanding," Franklin Central football coach Lance Scheib said of Washington, who was a three-year, two-way starter and a finalist for The Star's Position Awards at wide receiver and defensive back.

As a senior, he had 42 catches for 658 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, he made 67 tackles, with four interceptions, two for game-winning scores. He also averaged 29.2 yards on kick returns and 19.8 yards on punt returns.

"Donald's outlook on life is a refreshing reminder of why I chose this profession," Scheib said. "He approaches every difficult situation with determination and dedication, which is why he will always be a success in whatever he does."

Flashes basketball coach Mark James said the 6-1, 185-pound Washington is the best athlete in the past 20 years in the program. The three-year starter was a defensive stopper who played a critical role for a 2004 sectional championship squad.

"Donald understands that a positive attitude and great work ethic are two of the keys to success," James said.

Washington's results in the long jump, which include finishes of fourth, first, first and second in the past four state meets, put him with the state's all-time best in that event. His best mark (23 feet, 43/4 inches) was his winning jump his junior year.

"What I think the Buckeye coaching staff saw in Donald was a winner and great competitor," track coach Mark Branstad said. "He's the best competitor I've ever seen and also a team-oriented athlete."

I know that Laurinaitis is getting plenty of attention for his "coming out party" tonight (and rightly so), but Washington played a hell of a game as well. Ohio State has gone from having huge question marks at corner to having at least three guys (Jenkins, Washington, and Smith) who deserve to play major minutes. And Andre Amos broke up a pass tonight as well. Looks like tOSU is still "Cornerback U".

Donald had a HUGE game last night! His return on that goalline fumble was the turning point in the game, not to mention his tackles and pass break ups helped us get the Texas O off the field and put Troy's Boys back on the field. From now on, I'll be very confident in our DB depth, knowing Washington will be back there for us!
