Richardson, a 6-foot-6, 280-pounder who was just moved from defensive end to outside linebacker on Tuesday, worked with the first-string defense during Thursday's practice.

"You gotta stay positive, man. You gotta be thankful for having a shot to keep playing," said Richardson, a former Ohio State standout who laughed when I asked if the last couple years have turned him into a skeptic.

Richardson was surprisingly unsigned as a free agent in 2011 and spent the entire year out of football. Then last year, he signed with the New York Jets and had a great performance at both end and outside linebacker before being cut because too many established guys were on the roster.

But now, he feels like he's got a real opportunity since the Saints are switching defenses from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and switching coordinators to Rob Ryan, who coached Richardson during his first two seasons with the Raiders.

"With a lot of new pieces to the staff and a lot of new guys on the team and Sean (Payton) being gone for a year and coming back, I think there's a lot of fresh eyes on us. So there's no preconceived, no favorites," Richardson said. "Everybody's just working hard, and they're gonna pick the best 53 guys, and that's all you can ask for as a veteran."

Richardson actually signed with the Saints in January - more than a month before the team hired Ryan. So it was just a bonus when the two were reunited.

But obviously Ryan is a champion for Richardson's cause. Richardson started 22 games during their two seasons together with the Raiders, with a total of four sacks and 85 tackles.

"I think he's tough, he's smart and he works hard," Ryan said. "I've never had him at linebacker before, so we're gonna play him there and see what that looks like. He's had two days to be with (linebackers coach) Joe Vitt, so I think he'll be alright."

Ryan said the Saints moved Richardson both because of their rash of injuries and because "he's been showing up, he's been looking good at defensive end, and we're just trying to create that position flexibility."

Richardson had three more sacks as a reserve with the Raiders in 2009, but he was placed on injured reserve after a minor knee surgery during training camp in 2010 and was later released.

The Seahawks picked Richardson up for the last two months of 2010. But then he went unsigned as a free agent during the post-lockout frenzy of 2011. The Jets brought him back last year - where he also played both positions - but the opportunity wasn't there.

"It was funny, a lot of guys on the team were shocked. They said, 'I thought we were really gonna use you.' But I said, 'It's just the business, man,'" said Richardson, who has put a positive spin on his time away.

"I've honestly been tip-top these last three years (health-wise)," Richardson said. "I've felt great, my body's felt amazing. I feel great now. It's funny, as hard as it is to say now, but in retrospect that year and a half off, you feel rejuvenated. No hits, no shots on you. So now that you're back fresh, I feel like I'm 25 again, and I feel like I could do this for six more years. You know, it's a good feeling."

Insurance for his future: Saints DE Richardson focuses on more than football

METAIRIE, La. ? For most players on New Orleans? 90-player roster, the time after morning practice is spent going over the playbook, resting and trying to find ways to get ahead for the afternoon.

For Jay Richardson, the time is spent checking in on JNR & Associates, his insurance brokerage firm in Columbus, Ohio.

What, you don?t think an NFL player has to find ways to earn a living outside of football?

?Fortunately I?ve got a great business partner who works his butt off,? Richardson said, adding, ?I just try to make calls and in between practices, make sure everything is going smooth and then it?s back to learning linebacker.?

Richardson began his insurance firm about three years ago when he was struggling to stick in the NFL.

Drafted in the fifth round in 2007 by Rob Ryan and the Oakland Raiders, Richardson lasted until the second week of the 2010 season, when he was waived. Two months later, Seattle picked him up through the end of the 2010 season.

He was out of football in 2011 and in 2012, he went to training camp with the New York Jets, but was released before the season. He didn?t get picked up again until New Orleans grabbed him on Jan. 4.

Maybe in 2007 Richardson figured football would be his big ticket. Seven seasons later, he knows it?s not and is prepared to explain to young teammates that relying solely on football is fool?s gold.

?That?s something I try to be kind of a guiding light for a lot of young guys in a sense that, listen, this ride will end eventually and we?ll all end up being regular Joe?s one day,? Richardson said. ?And that?s OK. There?s nothing wrong with that. That?s part of life. You?ve got to love it and find another passion.?

Jay Richardson strengthens case to help New Orleans Saints fill void at outside linebacker

Miami Gardens, Fla. -- Jay Richardson got to skip a few of these fourth preseason games earlier in his career, when he was a starter for the Oakland Raiders. But the 29-year-old New Orleans Saints linebacker is well aware his circumstances have changed now that he's trying to crack back into the NFL after a two-year absence.

And he made the most of his final opportunity Thursday with two sacks in a 24-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

"Sure, I sat out a few fourth preseason games. But you've got to know your situation," Richardson said. "I know the position I'm in. So you've got to go to work."

Richardson said he feels "solid" about everything he was able to accomplish this summer, as he consistently stood out for the Saints despite switching from defensive end to linebacker two weeks into training camp.

"I worked my butt off," Richardson said. "I competed at defensive end, switched positions, competed at linebacker, and gave it my best shot. I thought I played pretty solid through the preseason, so I can live with what I did.

"I'm definitely hoping I proved myself relevant and worth my salt. You know, I know I can hold my own in this league. So I'm hoping there's a chance here for me."

Vargas: The Saints’ Jay Richardson deserves a roster spot

Jay Richardson had not made an NFL roster since 2010, so he began selling insurance in Ohio.

He shouldn’t sell another policy any time soon, though — he needs to be a member of the New Orleans Saints come Week 1.

After knee injuries ended outside linebacker Will Smith’s season and possibly did the same to outside linebacker Victor Butler, the Saints apparently are poised to replace them with Martez Wilson (the third-round pick in 2011 with four career sacks and a fumble recovery) and Junior Galette (who has tallied 9.5 sacks and is in his fourth year with the team).

The problem is neither played in any of the Saints’ four exhibitions this preseason. Wilson has been dealing with an elbow injury, and Galette has had a leg problem. It’s asking a lot to expect both of them to face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South showdown to open the regular season Sept. 8 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome without some good help waiting in the shadows.

The Saints knew that and made a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for veteran outside linebacker Parys Haralson, who has 21.5 sacks in six seasons. But that didn’t happen until Monday, and Haralson sat out Thursday’s 24-21 loss in the preseason finale at Miami.

Enter Richardson. After spending his first three years in the league with the Oakland Raiders and part of a fourth in Seattle, he washed out following 2010. The former Ohio State player obtained a license to sell insurance before reporting to camp with the Saints this preseason as a defensive end. He moved to outside linebacker amid the injuries at the position.

Richardson, who spent two years playing for Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Oakland, went into Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Thursday hoping the bubble he was riding didn’t pop. It certainly didn’t seem that it would.

On third-and-8 early in the second quarter, the 6-foot-6, 280-pounder forced his way into the Dolphins backfield and dropped quarterback Pat Devlin for an 8-yard loss at Miami’s 34. The Dolphins punted.

Richardson followed that with a 7-yard sack of fourth-string Dolphins quarterback Aaron Corp, who tweaked his shoulder on the play and left the game. Richardson accounted for half the sacks New Orleans had against Miami.

Very surprised to see #Saints cut Jay Richardson. Had such a strong performance this preseason at a OLB position where they needed help. Also had the versatility to play DE.

I suppose that means he was ranked 4th or lower on their depth chart at the OLB position, and he'll lose out to other guys who can help more on special teams (Rudus Johnson perhaps). Also shows they have faith in Junior Galette, Martez Wilson and Parys Haralson to be ready for Week 1 at that position. ... Could also continue to look for help after cuts around the league.

Jay Richardson thankful to be back after re-signing with New Orleans Saints: notebook

Outside linebacker Jay Richardson suspected a reunion with the New Orleans Saints might be coming. He just didn't expect it to happen so fast.

Richardson spent all of the 2013 preseason in New Orleans, but didn't make the Saints' 53-man roster. He immediately returned home to Ohio following the final cut day, hopeful that he'd get a phone call from the team at some point.

After watching the Saints first game on TV, he started to think it could happen sooner rather than later.

Defensive linemen Tyrunn Walker and Brodrick Bunkley both left the game with injuries, while outside linebacker Martez Wilson didn't even play.

Pre-Richardson, the Saints had only four healthy defensive linemen on the roster. They're carrying only three outside linebackers, with Wilson and Junior Galette working through their respective injuries.

"I assumed because of injuries, guys being banged up, and just numbers, at the (defensive) line and the outside linebacker spot, I knew they'd probably make some moves to kind of shore up a few things," Richardson said.

New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Jay Richardson's tenure with the team didn't last long. Richardson, who was re-signed Sept. 12 after being cut in the preseason, was released Tuesday to make room for defensive end Keyunta Dawson.

Dawson (6-3, 258) was released by the Tennessee Titans on Saturday. Dawson has 117 tackles and one sack in his career, but hasn't compiled any tackles during his two games in Tennessee this season.

The Saints re-signed Richardson in Week 2 before the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to aid depth to an ailing defensive line. He played only 11 snaps on defense against Tampa Bay, four against the Arizona Cardinals, and had only special teams snaps against the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears.

Richardson is more suited to play as a 3-4 linebacker, while Dawson played as a 4-3 defensive end in Tennessee. Dawson, a former Evangel standout, saw defensive snaps and special teams snaps in Weeks 3 and 4 for the Titans.
