Does your bigdealometer and ranking of a 2 pertain to how it may affect the team via suspension of a game or two or to the charge itself or both?

I'm not BN27, but I know him well enough to say that he was speaking as himself, an OSU fan; and not as something he's not, Doug's dad.

As an OSU fan, this is a 2 on a give-a-crap-o-meter.

If I were Doug's dad, this is an eleventy-billion.

Those who conflate the two need to ask themselves just who it is they think they are. This is not to say that one cannot judge. To me, that's BS. Not judging behavior is just stupid. But to suggest this is a big deal in the grand scheme is blowing it out of proportion at best. There are many things for us to care about in the grand scheme, and OVI by a 20-something kid is sadly too common to fret about unless you want to die of a stroke before you hit 50.

There's a lot that will go on before this is all cleared up. I believe the athletic department has a policy of letting the legal process run it's course, so he'll probably get an indefinite suspension for the time being. Not a good thing with fall camp right around the corner. Unfortunately, since he's underage, any trace of alcohol in his system is grounds for a DUI. If this would have happened a month or two ago, the bigdealometer reading would have been low, but at this point, he may still be dealing with the courts well into the season. It's all speculative at this point. Hopefully, things will get sorted out quickly and without to much ado, and Doug will have learned a big lesson. Maybe a younger player will get some extra practice snaps and tear it up. Whatever happens, it's just disappointing to see, especially after the Clifford incident. I hope everything works out as well as possible for Doug.

What was his BAC?

I myself had a OVI being under aged .. it sucks. It's expensive and inconvenient. My personal situation was that an office fell in behind me when I made an illegal left hand turn - followed me for 1.2 miles, I parked my car at an apartment complex and began to get out to go to my friends house to hang out and crash. The officer then (after my car was off) turned on his lights and asked for me to blow - which I refused. In hindsight, I would have done things differently, but I was always told not to test.

As it relates to the team - there has to be disciplinary action.. but it's not a big deal in my eyes.. stupid thing to do though, a cab ride is much cheaper.

In Ohio, even the scent of alcohol is grounds for an OVI. I learned this lesson the hard way. Thank MADD and the legislators :) (not that it shouldn't be that way to protect the public - just salty over mine considering I had reached my destanation without driving like a "drunk")

Interesting. As an OSU fan, this rates a little higher than a 2 on my give-a-crap-meter mainly because as an upperclassman, I would expect a little more from him in the leadership area than this. I would expect more from him, having been in the JT system for 2 full years, in the ways of understanding the team/family concept.

As an OSU fan, this may rate no higher than a 4 for me on the give-a-crap-meter. Ultimately though, the only give-a-crap-meter that matters is the one JT has and I would speculate that it may rate a little higher on his.

While I agree that blowing it out of proportion is not necessary, at the same time downplaying it is just as bad, if not more so. We aren't...Penn State.

The rule on ranking the severity of an off the field incident points you to the following considerations:

1. Is this a starter?

2. Is this a star?

3. How deep are we at the position?

4. Will any key games be missed?

5. How long since our last incident?

Assuming he will be on the field for USC and if we had more depth at DL I would rate this a 1. But as is, 2 sounds about right.

The worst thing it does is reset the "days since the last off field incident" clock (I discount Clifford because he has been dismissed from the team). The next one starts off as at least a 3 if it happens before the season starts.

I'm not a coach....me yawning over this as it relates to the team isn't the same as Joe Paterno flat out lying about things on Outside the Lines. It's not a big deal to me. He'll probably miss a couple games....maybe even the USC game. But he's not Beanie or Robo or Laurinaitis.....so it's a 2 for me.

Interested to hear what his BAC was. As a minor, even one drink pretty much qualifies you for an OVI I think.

Correct. It's 0.02, which is to say that you shouldn't drive after a gargle of mouthwash.

I seriously doubt, however, that Doug would have been charged if his BAC were that low.

And he won't be kicked out of school. That would be insane to completely take away a young man's future for a mistake made by many OSU students, including many people I (and I'm sure many of you guys) know. That doesn't mean that OVIs shouldn't be taken seriously. They should... by the legislature, who set the criminal penalties.
