On one end, its easy to see how you could feel bad for him, but think about it this way:

OSU is his dream job. There is no question about it. He was rather unqualified to take the job on a permanent basis. Yet he still got it. He got the honor and the responsibility of running his dream job for a year.

I mean, if you were asked "Would you have sex every night with Scarlett Johannson for a million dollars, but it'd only last for one year" would you do it?

In Luke's eyes, its probably been a dream come true for him, even if he gets replaced. He is building up a good resume to take to another university to prepare him self to take over for when Meyer retires. Not on interim, but on a full time basis.

Lets remember something: Luke is 38 years old. That gives him years further to prepare for the OSU coaching job. Having said that, the median age for a head coach coming to OSU is 48 years old, between Bruce, Coop, Tressel and (assuming) Meyer. The only other coach to come on that young was (oddly enough) Woody Hayes at 38.

There are rumblings that he might stay on as the DC.

Meyer would rather coach OSU. His three schools that he would like to coach are commonly known as OSU, Mich, and ND. The turds up north already have their man and ND is sticking with tomato face... I guess it's possible that he could use Texas to drive up the price for his services, but he won't coach there if the OSU job is open.

I think it is in his contract. There's probably a link to the contract article somewhere in this thread. The interim HC job was for a year but his contract is longer, so if a new HC does not retain him, he will be compensated. If you listen to any of his interviews, its clear he went into this with eyes wide open. I don't think anyone needs to worry about Luke.

It's limited how bad anyone can feel for a person who gets to do their dream job, however briefly, since so many people never do.

Conan O'Brien, on his last Tonight Show:

Luke is a quality guy and is a great team player. He also knows what "interim" means. He has been given a great opportunity and done a credible job with it. I think he should be rewarded for his loyalty and stepping in at a crappy time and taking a job at the worst possible time. I think its all been discussed before he took the IHC job and he isn't going anywhere, I hope.

Urban is, if nothing else, smart. Coming in he would have no defensive worries. The tOSU defense has been great forever and JH can't DC forever and Luke is the obvious choice to head up the defense after he retires. I think this has been the plan for a long time, even before JT's departure. Maybe that happens soon or as some others are saying AHC...in waiting.

I think they both wind up here and both wind up happy. I don't think it is an insult to keep Luke as the "interim" was never removed.

Now...if Luke beats scUM by 30 in two weeks.....that's how you remove the "interim" tag and i'll rethink everything....but I'm glad we are the school Urban wants to come to....we need to get him to change his initials though...can't bring myself to type them.

I can totally see Fick retaining the Assistant Head Coach mantle. I've read and heard that Heacock might be retiring anyway so moving over to Defensive Coordinator isnt much of a stretch anyways. Let's say Urban comes in, stays for 10 years makes his 50+million and retires. That leaves Fickell under age 50 and better experience in leadership, which someone else already mentioned. Sounds like the perfect scenario for all involved, unless you are a grad assistant with delusions of grandeur.

Keeping the Ohio boys in Ohio is very important. I know there was debate going on in another thread, but its true. To fully understand what it means for Ohio State to be the be-all end-all, you have to be from here. Fick is one of those boys and so is Urban. Vrabel will probably stay as well. Excellent combination of talent and experience coming on I think.

I really don't have a clue as to what is going to happen. I have noticed though that in his interviews that Fick really seems relaxed and at peace with his situation, more so in recent weeks than early on. If this just because he is getting more comfortable in front of the media? Could be as simple as that. Or is it because he knows his job is secure regardless of how the rest of the season plays out. Either he has been told that he will remain the HC or that if they bring somebody else in that one of the conditions would be to retain Fick as Assitant HC and DC.

Time will tell...
