F Mickey Mitchell (transfer to Arizona State)

After watching that highlight film, is it just me or does he look like a future San Antonio Spur?
Honestly, I just hope he becomes a good college player. He was not a strong scorer in AAU, which is not known for its defensive prowess, and his outside shooting has been particularly sparse. He may fit best at a point forward role but you still need to be able to shoot the ball. I'd be more worried that he sits the bench and transfers rather than going early to the pros.

The question is whether he isn't a good scorer, or simply prefers to set up others to score? He has very good assist numbers and the highlights I've seen seem to show a lot of plays where he could take the ball himself, but decides to pass it off to a team mate for a higher percentage finish. I don't think he's ever gong to be a big time scorer, but I think its more his mentality than that he simply can't score.

I do think his perimeter shooting is something that he clearly needs to improve on. Scouts don't seem to think he's a poor shooter, but concur its an area he can improve on. He has good size, athleticism and ball skills, so even if not scoring, he's not a guy who is just standing around taking up space.

Here is his AAU shooting chart FWIW:

Note: I don't think all of his shots were tracked on the chart.

TBH I won't worry about it until I get a good look at his shooting stroke. I'm more worried that he's only 45% at the rim. The youtube mixtapes show some pretty spectacular finishes but maybe that's because he's trying to be too fancy. Just speculation on my part.

Love this kid. I just hope he doesnt pass up too many easy shots for a pass while he's here. Great to get your teammates involved but look to score when it's there. Some of his passes on that video were sick too.

Great kid coming in as well as a lot of others. Going to see a lot of people on the Ohio State basketball bandwagon in the near future.

Agreed. His body has filled out and he looks to be Big Ten ready right now.

This kid is one of the most unusual talents I've ever seen on the court. His court vision and passing ability would seem to argue for his playing point guard, though I'm not sure his height and handle would support that position.

In any event, his impact on the game goes way beyond the stat sheet. Seldom have I been so excited to see an incoming player at Ohio State.

Honestly, continuing to recruit guys like Ahmad in 2015 in spite of having Mitchell already committed was hard to rationalize until now, especially since they already had a couple guys on the team that can play the 3/4 like both of those two can. Really Ahmad plays the same position Mitchell would, and he's more skilled offensively in terms of being able to put the ball in the hole. The whole recruiting plan that they had implemented - i.e., continuing to recruit wings in the 2015 class and 2016 class - makes more sense now. I know he is a great passer but obviously his lack of point production was a concern to me in terms of how he could get on the court at the next level. If you can't really shoot and your best attribute is passing as a 6'7" wing, it's hard to get PT when you're on the same team with the likes of Loving, KBD, Tate, etc. And as we saw last year it is a real challenge to your offense when your PG can't shoot so that made him playing that spot questionable. I really hope Grandstaff still wants to come, he was good friends with Mickey but obviously now that Mitchell isn't coming, I would hope that Austin still would make his way to Columbus.

When former Ohio State linebacker Mike Mitchell announced he was leaving the football team in January, many people speculated his brother, Mickey, wouldn't be far behind.

Much like his brother, Mickey is a freak athlete. Unlike Mike, Mickey is a top 15 small forward in the 2015 class, ranked highly even after suffering a severe knee injury before his sophomore year.

"The shoe never seemingly dropped with Mitchell, as he even posed for an "O-H-I-O" picture with fellow Ohio State commits Austin Grandstaff, Daniel Giddens and A.J. Harris at the LeBron James Skills Academy in July.

Tonight, however, Mickey severed ties with Ohio State and reopened his commitment.

Best of luck to him as he continues his search for a better fit. "
