Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

Exactly. The one thing that scares me the most about our defense is our inability to stop backs gashing the gaps. I expressed that worry back in '06 when we played them in Austin. UT doesn't seem to have that kind of threat right now, but one thing is for sure, sometimes talent doesn't show up on the stat sheets. But if McCoy has to carry the O all by himself, I don't see how this is going to be different than the last time, when our LBers whacked him pretty hard a few times and he never recovered.

Not the same linebackers..Definitely not the same Colt Mccoy

texas would've had a pretty good chance of beating us in 06 if they had just stuck with the run

I think some of us are selling Texas' running backs short. Look what some of those Illinois backs did to us and that sould tell you that it doesn't take a star running back to run on us. The Texas offense will create lanes and it's up to our defense to close them and also make tackles when the opportunity presents itself. Texas is just so good at passing IMO that why would they run the ball all the time? This game IMO will be frustrating to watch as a buckeye fan. Not because we're going to get embarressed but because this is the type of offense that's gonna be very hard to get off the field on 3rd downs.

I dont see this being a low scoring afair....Texas spreads things out, and Colt is great at running it when he needs to. This is just the type of offense that has given us fits in the past. And lets face the facts...aginst quality teams the last couple years our defense has given up alot of points and Texas is very, very QUALITY. Good news is I think our offense matches up against them well. I hope we keep thier offense off the field by running Beanie/boom down there throat. Also I think if we are creative and unpredictable with Pryor he will come up big. If we are succesful early running the ball it will set up play action and we will score alot of points. If we cant control the line of scrimmage and run the ball things will get ugly.

Laurinaitis and Freeman are both still here. Terry is sitting on the bench because we have someone better in Homan. I see that as an upgrade. Say what you want about McCoy's completion per. or QB rating, the kid was throwing for a massive number of yards in '06 just as he is now. Sure, that was only his 2nd start when we bumped into him, but I'm sure we'll still see the same McCoy. That said I'd [censored] my pants if McCoy is now 6-6 230 and runs a 4.4.

Agreed. Mack gave up the run way too soon. But one of the reasons why they did give up on the option was that McCoy got smacked really hard by Terry.

Texas relies on Colt McCoy, so the key matchup will be how our secondary forces Colt to run/force throws. Our DEs have had problems with losing containment on the outside, so that's worrisome.

This will be the best matchup of the night on Jan. 5th but IMO the KEY matchup will be our defensive line versus their offensive line. If we dont get some sort of pressure from the front four we're dead in the water. Plus it'll also be up to the defensive line to make sure those running lanes aren't there that often.

As stated (and a great point) Texas in 06' was running the ball very effectively until for some reason they deemed it necessary to pass the ball every play?

Not the same linebackers..Definitely not the same Colt Mccoy

2 of the 3 starting backers are still here for us and the new starter IMO is better than our 3rd starter in 06'. However, McCoy is much better as well.

if there is one thing that I could point to as the most impressive thing about this texas team it would have to be their ability to sustain drives and pick up third downs. Colt has set the bar so high that there are actually people in this town now that seem to be upset when he "only" completes 77% of his passes.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the horns respond to playing a very physical defense. Have they truely become the lunchpail longhorns like everyone wants to believe?

Those offenses have had running backs that can beat us...

I think the only one that had good running backs was USC. LSU was running Hester at us and while he's good he's not someone that should've did as well as he did. Florida in 06' had NO running backs and still had success. I think it's more scheme than it is actual talent.

Was it fair to say we've seen the best of TP after his second start?Colt McCoy's a heisman finalist, and for a good reason. I remember people stunned by how "good" Mark Sanchez was against this exact same secondary.
