G D'Angelo Russell (Unanimous 1st Team All-American, All-Star, Los Angeles Lakers)

Russell has really been lighting it up lately, has performed extremely well at the AAU event he is currently at and the one before this one, and been singled out as a stand-out performer at both events loaded with top-50 prospects. Strong candidate for McD's AA next spring.

D?Angelo Russell, 6-4, PG/SG, Senior, Montverde Academy (FL), Ohio State: Named co-MVP of the event, Russell coincidentally made his SLAM print debut last week when we featured him in our PUNKS section of SLAM 171, on newsstands now. On Friday night, against the USA Midwest team, Russell put together one of his best performances yet after finishing with a game-high 28 points, shooting 10 for 15 from the floor. He has one of the best pull-up jumpers in the country, and can sink shots with a hand in his face, much due to creating space with the great fadeaway shot he has in his repertoire. Additionally, although being far from the quickest man on the floor, he gets by defenders on his way to the rim since he possesses one of the best change of pace ball-handles. He tends to dribble slow and calm before shifting gears out of the blue and therefore tends to catch defenders off guard. Russell demonstrated that he can impact at the point position with some very impressive crisp passes to open teammates.

Kendall Marshall with less court vision, but with better athleticism and 100 times better shooter/finisher.

Bad comparison... Kendall is not a great shooter, has a high turnover percentage and is a pure passing point guard... also pretty slow and not a great athlete.

Which is why I mentioned that Russell was 100 times better of a shooter/finisher. Marshall's A:TO ratio in 2 years of college was 3.5:1 and was a lottery pick after two years of college (his athleticism numbers at the combine were decent).

What I see as similar between the two:

- Physically, they are about the same height and are lefties.
- They both play a little upright
- They can't blow by defenders with athleticism, but with a quick crossover or change of direction (call it setting up the defender), they can get past most defenders.
- Good passers (Marshall has better vision and more of a PG court presence, but Russell is a slick passer).

Differences
- Marshall has a PG mentality, Russell is a scorer (better shooter and finisher) with PG skills.
- Russell is a better athlete

4. D'Angelo Russell, Montverde, Fla. ? I know this is about 20 spots higher than you'll find Russell elsewhere. I also know some will call this a vote for the home team because Russell grew up in Louisville and played his freshman year at Central High School. Fine. Russell has committed to Ohio State, but it was an assistant at another Big Ten school that insisted Russell belonged in the top five.

"He's a pro," the coach said. "He'll have the same kind of career at Ohio State that Evan Turner had. He didn't have a good summer, he had a great summer." Another coach agreed: "I don't remember seeing him miss many shots."
