EXTREMISTS MORE WILLING TO SHARE THEIR OPINIONS, STUDY FINDS

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? People with relatively extreme opinions may be more willing to publicly share their views than those with more moderate views, according to a new study. The key is that the extremists have to believe that more people share their views than actually do, the research found.

The results may offer one possible explanation for our fractured political climate in the United States, where extreme liberal and conservative opinions often seem to dominate.
"When people with extreme views have this false sense that they are in the majority, they are more willing to express themselves," said Kimberly Rios Morrison, co-author of the study and assistant professor of communication at Ohio State University.
How do people with extreme views believe they are in the majority? This can happen in groups that tend to lean moderately in one direction on an issue. Those that take the extreme version of their group?s viewpoint may believe that they actually represent the true views of their group, Morrison said.

    Things I find extreme:

Those shorts that make guys look like Bart Simpson.

Pants worn below the bottom of the tusch.

Baseball caps worn backwards by people who are not catchers, or off center by folks who are not drunk, or over the ears by people who have not had their head shrunk.

    Reality TV.

The news networks concentrating on celebrity.

    UnderArmor commercials.

    Notre Dame fans.

That's a good start. I'm sure there's more 'cause I'm an old fart and I can say that if I want.

Baseball caps worn highlighting restaurants with pointy edges & adjustable snaps, aiming upwards like a missile.

Commercialization of sports with ancient, washed up musicians.

The news networks concentrating on town hall shouting.

Medical commercials, excluding Oops I Crapped My Pants.

What about people with extremely moderate opinion views? It seems they would be even more willing publicly to, um, share.

(Yes, I said extremely moderate opinion views. It's funnier.)

    Perspective

Why are extremists so extreme in their thinking? People go over the edge in their perspective about politics, religion, behavior, gender, race, beliefs, and any number of factors. Where the heck do people get the energy to be so extreme? Isn't life complicated enough without going over the edge?:(

    Rhetorical question?

Can you be an extremist moderate?

Hmmmm, food for thought to a starving nation!
