HB Dontre 'DeSoto' Wilson (Official Thread)

I don't care, seems like every time he makes at least 2 guys miss.

I've thought the same thing but in reviewing the film, I think it is a combination of not getting blocks downfield and Dontre being indecisive. He just does not look as fast as billed, not sure what is going on. Don't get me wrong, he still is playing well...just not the electric playmaker we thought he would be.

I just hope the indecisiveness is from the fact that he is over thinking. It appears that he may have a vision problems as sometimes (not always) he misses an obvious lane. Pretty easy to see the "open daylight" when you are in the stands or watching on TV....  I would love Dontre to prove me wrong in the next couple of weeks...:chest:

In another thread someone mentioned that Dontre had failed to live up to the 'hype' so I thought I'd look how his actual numbers compare...

Single season Buckeye APY records:

All-Purpose Yards Per Game Average - Season
1. Keith Byars 203.8
2. Eddie George 180.3
Dontre Wilson 173.125 (through 8 games)
3. Archie Griffin 167.5
4. Archie Griffin 166.4
5. Tim Spencer 151.8
6. Tim Spencer 149.5
7. Achie Griffin 146.0
8. Calvin Murray 142.3
9. David Boston 142.2
10. Pepe Pearson 141.8

All-Purpose Yards - Season (# Games)
1. Keith Byars (12) 2,441
Dontre Wilson (14) 2,424
2. Eddie George (13) 2,344
Dontre Wilson (13) 2,251

8. Calvin Murray (12) 1,707
9. David Boston (12) 1,706
10. Pepe Pearson (12) 1,702

The last table shows where Dontre is on pace to finish for both 13 & 14 games (depending upon whether or not the Buckeyes make the B1G CG).

These stats on Dontre don't make sense. He has 18 carries through 8 games with a average of 5.6 per carry and 0 TDs. How are you getting him to 74 carries over 12 games? He's on pace for 27 carries, 151 yards and 0 TDs. From a reception stand point he is on pace for 28 grabs and 416 yards with 3 TDs. Those numbers pail in comparison to the other guys.

If we are talking about offense, those numbers are significantly different.

Nice numbers and good research, but Wilson hasn't been the big play threat that some of us thought.

I'm going to leave Harvin out of the equation for the moment. Here are how Ginn and Wilson compare in big scoring plays. I am using their freshman years plus the first eight games of their sophomore years:

Ginn's big play touchdowns (20+ yards)
42-yard reception
57-yard reception
58-yard reception
59-yard reception
60-yard punt return
62-yard punt return
65-yard punt return
67-yard punt return
82-yard punt return
100-yard kick-off return

Wilson's big play touchdowns (20+ yards)
24-yard reception
24-yard reception
26-yard reception
27-yard reception

Ginn had many more big scoring plays, and each of his big plays was for much greater yardage. Note also that Wilson played in 14 games as a freshman, Ginn in just 12.

EDIT: Wilson's longest plays per category:

Rush: 26 yards
Reception: 40 yards
Punt return: 32 yards
Kick-off return: 51 yards

agreed. I don't think he's as fast as we thought he is... still a good option and will present some problems for the opposing offense but he's not someone like Ginn who when he hits the open field you automatically put your arms up in a touchdown signal. In fact every time he is in the open there is someone tracking him that you KNOW has an angle and is going to shut down the play, with Tedd or Percy you couldn't have a big enough angle on them.

Having watched tOSU football for several decades, Ginn is a once in a lifetime player. Dontre is a true sophomore who has already had a significant impact with the majority of his career still ahead of him. There is a high probability he will leave Columbus after having an outstanding career. A great one? Probably. Once in a lifetime? Probably not.
