Head Coaches that call their own plays....How many???Who are successful???

Thought it would be interesting to get Buckeye fans opinions on this topic. I can`t for the life of me remember a lot of coaches doing this recently. Joe Tiller at Purdue comes to mind as someone that I thought called his own stuff. Maybe Urban Meyer calls his own stuff at Florida. It seems that our offense at tOSU has had its ups and downs over the years. I personally thought we had turned the corner in 06 and then 07 was going well until Beanie got hurt. Go Bucks

Carroll made the defensive calls...I think?
Mike Leach, I wouldn't count that though since his offense only has a dozen plays anyways.

I think calling a good game from the sidelines would be more difficult since you can get caught up in the up and down emotions of the players. Being up in the press box lets a play caller stay detached from that. That being said, I don't think it applies to Tressel.

It's tough to say considering I don't really know how much info JT gets from the guys in the booth. I've called plays at the Varsity level in HS for a few years, and it's way easier if you have a good booth guy. The vantage point from the field is a much bigger obstacle than the emotions of the game.

JT probably has a list of plays that he wants to run when he sees certain looks from the defense. I would suppose that the guy talking to him from the booth gives him the plays to choose from based upon the defenses alignment and what film study told them to run.

If JT has ever made an off-hand remark I've never heard it..his words are measured and thought out...It would take the greatest lawyer ever to get something out of JT..I know as fans ..we would like a Dennis Green Mike Ditka Woody Hayes blow up now and then..but I assure you behind closed doors JT gets his point across...

There's a fire burning in the professor's belly. Make no mistake about it.

From what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, Bollman makes the calls from the booth, but JT has "veto power" on those calls. How often he exercises it, I have no earthly idea.

Does Hazell still get involved in the gameplanning? I remember hearing about his increased involvement last season, but haven't heard much about it this year...
