I just saw the video for this campaign on Sunday night, and wanted to spread the message that it showed to us. I'm sure that some of you may have seen it or atleast heard about it, but it is a campaign to support the children in Uganda who are being kidnapped to be brainwashed and used as child soldiers, and also the general poverty and lack of education due to the ongoing war with the rebels.

If at all possible, I completely reccomend that you get your hands on a copy of the video, and show it to all of your friends to raise awareness for this. It really puts your life in perspective, and gives you the motivation to give and to help for these kids. No one should have to go through life sleeping in alleyways at night, hiding from rebels trying to kidnap them and train them to kill.

I personally am going to give a monthly donation to the movement, which will help educate and take care of the kids, and also sponsor a kid living over there.

You can make a difference.

I just finished reading A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah. Gives a pretty good account of his experiences in Sierra Leone.

Another organization attacking this problem on a global scale is the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. They, and their partner organizations, have people on the ground working this issue all over sub-Saharan Africa, but also Burma, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Peru and a bunch of places. Their website contains tons of interesting information (check out their Global Report):

There's also a humorous website (not that there's a great deal of humor in this issue) called the Coalition to Promote the Use of Child Soldiers:

At the risk of throwing this into the political forum, did you know that the US is one of only two nations (the other being Somalia which lacks an organized government) that has not ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child? One reason we have not ratified is because we reserve the right to recruit 17 year olds into the military. While they are not supposed to be placed on active duty until the are 18, some occasionally are, and a few under 18 occasionally are placed in combat situations.
