The notorious serial killer who stalked London's East End, butchering prostitutes and terrorising the population, may not have been Jack the Ripper - but Jill.

An Australian scientist has used swabs from letters supposedly sent to police by the Ripper to build a partial DNA profile of the killer. The results suggest that the person who murdered and mutilated at least five women from 1888 onwards may have been a woman.

Interesting theory but it flies in the face of all conventional knowledge and beliefs about serial killers. Serial killers tend toward victims of the opposite sex and women serial killers tend toward less violent means of killing. Doesn't mean it's totally impossible.

However, keep in mind that the likely male suspect for the killings lived in a boarding house run by a woman, she likely would have touched the envelopes and stamps to sell them/hand them to her boarder. Heck, he could have written or licked them while still having his victims cells all over his hands and mouth. Point is, there are lots of possible ways / ideas to explain female dna in those locations.

Also, most experts on the case agree that the actual Ripper probably did not send any of those letters into police, specifically any signed with the name 'Jack the Ripper.' The only possible letter that anyone believes could have been from him/her was the one that came packaged with the half of a kidney. But I'm not sure if they ever linked that kidney positively to one of the victims.
