Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

I am not sure what thread to post this kind of bizarre observation in, so mods feel free to move.

For some reason, having been around for both Woody and Tressel, I have been contemplating the seemingly bizarre coincidence that arguably the two most prolific coaches and QB's in OSU history will always be intertwined in infamy.

I have a hard time buying that JT is a total fraud -- I think his philanthropy and countless acts of kindness were legit and he is still a good person that just got caught up in some 'bad' things while shouldering immense pressure. Definitely some parallels.

I have been saying this from the beginning. I guess that's what hurts about this. I'm a HUGE Tressel fan - he started at YSU my Junior year there, and he brought countless great football memories to me as an alum. I was excited when he came here and kind of looked at it as tOSU got my coach. I found myself taking his criticism personally, as weird as that may sound. I was disappointed when all this came out, and I've been through all the rationalizations found here. But even with all that I still have to wonder how he could not have noticed anything, and why he didn't put a stop to it. It's likely he may not have known the full extent of it with the stuff-for-tattoos deal, but somebody somewhere had to notice something. That being said I am an unapologetic fan of JT's despite what has come out.
I think that the evidence of what a great guy he is far outweighs his misgivings. Thanks Coach Tressel for 20+ years of memories - you will be missed.

Over some fuckin tatoos...

Just about. I was listening to King this morning on 24/7 sports and he had the guy from Bucknuts on there. Sounds to me like many people are placing the blame on this not on Posey, Herron, and others, but mostly on Pryor and Tressel's alleged special treatment of him as being the reason why JT doesn't have a job this morning.

You guys are getting both barrels this morning, that's for damn sure.

And stay away from Bo. (this will be a recurring theme until you guys name a head coach)

I doubt Bo agrees with your stance.

1. It wasn't the kids who caused Tressel's ouster. It was the fucking media whores who think nothing about ruining people's lives for the sake of a story and of stirring up controversy. I hope we can all remember that as the talents of Pryor, Posey et al are discussed in the months to come.
Yes, it was the kids. That's the thing that pisses me off the most about this whole situation. We are where we are because of a few "me first" assholes who got greedy and overly full of themselves and then selfishly acted on their own behalf without regard for anyone else. Because of their actions The University pays, the rest of the football team pays, Coach Tressel and is staff pays, and the alumni and fans pay (albeit to a much lesser extent...). I'm sorry if that sounds like "bashing", but let's call it what it is and quit pussyfooting around the issue. Nobody gives a shit about anyone but themselves anymore, and that's exactly why we're here talking about this now.

This hurts. I'm a very proud alum of The Ohio State University, as I'm sure many of us here are, and it really hurts to have our reputation tarnished and dragged through the mud.

By the way, MaxBuck- nothing personal man, just my opinion. And I've got to vent somewhere....

And this motherfucker should have his ass kicked. He's probably part of the problem. Again, "me first". Hey, he sold his cars, got to say that he's cool with the football players and boost his own ego. Fuck this prick.

"It's fair. He would have been fired anyway," said Aaron Kniffin, a car salesman who sold about 50 cars to Ohio State players and their relatives, transactions that are under scrutiny by a state agency and school officials. "You had a coach who knew about and covered up a scandal about memorabilia and tattoos."

I both Agree and disagree to a small point. We can all point fingers all around at the kids, Gene Smith, Gordon Gee, the FBI, hell, we can even point the finger at the Dispatch. They all had a part in what happened yesterday. But the one person who had the most control over this situation is the guy who resigned yesterday. As harsh as that sounds, he did have the most control over his job. I think had he done what he was supposed to do, that the fan base would be pissed for a little while, but would appreciate what he did cause he did the right thing.

I'm here to tell you, even with all of this going on, you are still The Ohio State University, and still one of the classiest programs in the history of the NCAA. My impression of the school, fan base, and team has not changed just because of the actions of a few knuckleheads. Most fans, I think will say the same thing.

Yes, that's true. He certainly could have made some better decisions dealing with all of this. I think he was trying to do the right thing in his mind, but I'm pretty disappointed in his actions.

And thanks for the support. I'm really looking forward to kicking Nebraska's ass in the future, but I'm glad to have another solid program and fans like you in the Big 10.

Well....looking forward...to you guys....TRYING to kick our asses...:wink2:

Thing is - you guys are still freaking OSU....you guys still can make a run - only guy not available is the former head coach, and that was already going to happen any damn way for 5 games, so, other than him permenantly not being there, what else has changed for the team?!? I think you guys still are solid.

Tressel is not gone because of the kids or the media. He is gone because the school thinks this will somehow mitigate the NCAA sanctions to come. If we get thesame as USC or worse, than the whole "self reporting" thing is a crock. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

If TP keeps showing up with cars, you guys will get a USC type punishment. I'm just in disbelief and dumfounded that he'd do something so stupid as to show up at a a team meeting where he's going to find out his head coach is gone partly because of some bad decisions he made....in a new ride.

Thanks for the memories Coach. I am awfully sad at seeing you go out like this, but the minute you treated those emails with less concern than you should have, you set yourself up for this. You are still one of the all-time greats at tOSU and you belong up there with Woody as far as I am concerned.

There is no way we can get anything near what USC got...we didn't have [Mark May] extend across multiple sports. Our athletic director didn't strut up to the podium and say...

I read between the lines and there was nothing but a lot of envy, and they wish they all were Trojans. As I told my staff, I said, 'You know, I feel invigorated by all this stuff ... with the penalty we got today I know we're bigger than life.'

I agree and that was my point. If we get what they (USC) got, the NCAA is full of it. Might as well have dug in and stonewalled for half a decade.

Damn it.

I was a Buckeye before Tressel, and I will be a Buckeye for the rest of my days. We will over come this sad, dark time and charge forward.

That said, I will also be a Tressel man for the rest of my days.

Thanks coach, you made me proud to call The Ohio State University my alma matter.

My only regret today is that you didn't get to leave on your own terms and with all the fan fare you truly deserve. We will move on..but you will NOT be forgotten or diminished in my mind.

Ever.

Some of this is earned, but at the same time I truly believe you deserved better from those at the University and certainly from the media. Folks want to preach about the integrity of the word 'scholar' in the term 'scholar athlete'....and then disregard the significance of what you accomplished for the university beyond the final score on Saturdays.

Just like Woody and Geiger before you, for all you did for so very many: you deserve so much better than the final chapter were given.

I only hope you will continue to cherish your accomplishments and your time at OSU as much as many (perhaps even all given some time) will always cherish you.

Keep your head up coach, just as Ohio State is bigger than any one man, your life is bigger than any one job.

Time and change.....
