Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

ZanesvilleTimesRecorder: Tressel not just beating M*ch*gan on the field

Tressel not just beating Michigan on the field

This time around, there wasn't much game planning.

In fact, it may have been among the easier victories of his coaching career - certainly the most uneventful. And it came against the school's biggest rival, nonetheless.

Indeed, Ohio State's Jim Tressel just keeps beating Michigan.

When mega-recruit Terrelle Pryor finally signed on the dotted line, choosing OSU over the Wolverines and first-year coach Rich Rodriquez last week, it was another example of how the balance of power has shifted in the Big Ten.

Pryor's big decision - the drawn-out, time-consuming ordeal that it was - captivated fans throughout Big Ten country. It certainly did in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, where media and fans followed the situation as closely as the Democratic debates.

Barack and Hillary? Not that important.

But what did Terrelle eat today? Did he shower or use the latrine? Does he prefer Pizza Rolls or Bagel Bites? One can't help but feel for the kid, even if he did get himself into this mess in the first place.

What had them all buzzing? Because Pryor's good. Real good. Some think he's the best recruit in the country - definitely the best quarterback.

cont'd...

In the Michigan recruiting thread, I had mentioned how Michigan won only one conference title in an 18-year stretch from 1951 to 1968. While verifying the years, I noticed a great stat: Tressel's current 6-1 record against Michigan matches our best-ever one-loss stretch against Michigan, which happened only one other time ('57-'63, which also was a two-win, one-loss, four-win stretch). It's been mentioned that our current four-game win streak is tied for our longest ever against Michigan ('34-'37 and '60-'63 were the other two), so beating Michigan this season would not only give us our longest win streak ever against Michigan, but also our best-ever one-loss stretch against them (7-1).

Just rewatched the Pryor announcement sounds to me like JT landed this kid single handedly. Obviously the kids got to be comfortable with his coach but TP really makes it sound like his rapport with "Coach Tress" was his sole reason for coming to OSU. Yet another feather in JT's hat.

Coach Daniels had a helluva lot to do with it as well.

Another great comment from Coach Tressel.

Bucknuts (Free)

The coach was then asked if there was, truly, a gentlemen's agreement between Big Ten coaches not to poach one another's recruits. (On signing day, new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez was criticized by Purdue's Joe Tiller for signing one of the Boilers' previous verbals away.)

Tressel's response: "I guess only between gentlemen.":lol::lol::lol:

That retort drew a round of applause from the crowd near the end of the two-hour luncheon event.
