K Mike Nugent (All American, Lou Groza Winner, National Champion)

maisel mail bag...Nuge for Heisman?

Now I know this might sound absurd, but I don't see why Mike Nugent shouldn't at least be considered for the Heisman. I know he's just a kicker, but he's not your typical one. He is the best kicker in the country, not to mention the best player on the Buckeyes. He is perfect from inside 50, he probably could make one from 60. He is clutch, can make a game-winner from 54 out. He is a leader for them, a team captain. This is all for one of the top teams in the country. And I know that they wouldn't be half the team they are if it wasn't for him.

Nugent found the right team. More accurately, Ohio State needs Nugent. When you win games by single digits every week, your field goal kicker inflates in importance. Speaking of which, some USC fans have started a website promoting punter Tom Malone for the Heisman. Based on the Kansas State-Fresno State game, both Nugent and Malone have a better chance than Darren Sproles.

Its nice to dream about a kicker winning the award, but it will never happen.

I think it is possible, but it would take an extraordinary set of circumstances.

His FG% would have to be huge.

He would need to make a bunch of 50-yarders, maybe even a 60.

The rest of the nation's teams would need to demonstrate just how hard it is to find a reliable kicker. To now, they are doing just that.

He would have to be part of an offense that is going to be in a lot of close games where field goals make a difference. So far, so good.

He would have to make some big kicks on network TV. He has already done that and would need to continue.

This is where it gets a little tougher.

The Bucks would probably need to lose 1 game at most. Being in the BCS Championship Game would help tremendously.

Matt Leinart would probably have to either blow out a knee or lose 3 games. Losing 3 games is highly unlikely given their NAIA schedule.

Ditto Jason White.

There would have to be a lack of other dominant candidates.

There is no question the chances are extremely remote, but IMHO it is possible.

what exactly has leinart done to merrit a heisman? dump the ball off to reggie bush and let him scramble? throw deep and let reggie bush outrun everybody?

seems like theres 1 common thread between the leinart-bush-talent triangle.....and it doesnt start with L.

In addition to what's been mentioned, Nuge would need:

• 2 fake field goals where Nugent runs the ball for a first down
• 1 fake field goal where Nugent runs the ball for a touchdown
• 1 fake field goal where Nugent catches the ball for a touchdown
• 1 fake field goal where Nugent throws the ball for a touchdown
• 1 onside kick that Nuge recovers personally
• 1 kickoff in which Nuges makes the touchdown saving tackle and causes a fumble which he recovers.
• 1 blocked field goal where the other team's DB is racing to the endzone to score a touchdown against the Bucks. Nuge catches him from behind, strips the ball, and returns it deep into opposition territory.

I couldn't agree more. His three TDs and most of the 300+ yards against Va Tech came from Bush making the opposing safety look like a high schooler. Two of the TDs were on wide open, arching throws that any college QB could make. The third TD was a simple little screen that Bush took to the house. Somebody please explain how that makes Leinart a great QB? I just don't see it. The throws Zwick made to Holmes against Marshall were much more impressive then anything Leinart has done so far this year.

One thing is for sure. Kickers are blowing big kicks left and right. The media and fans alike are seeing the importance of a good kicker.
Nuge is getting a lot of national airtime for his exploits.
He does need to have a lot of big games to be considered. If he does this he will certainly get some consideration and deservedly so. The guy is a difference maker.

My question is why CAN'T a kicker win the Heisman?
Same reason the most dominant O-lineman in a generation can't win it. The position isn't 'sexy' enough, and doesn't make for good SportsCenter highlights. I'll be happy if anyone *but* Jason White wins it. He doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Archie
