LB Etienne Sabino (official thread)

From what I've been reading, it was actuallly 'Binos' request to RS. He's being mentored by Brian Rolle...doesn't get much better than that. I feel pretty confident in guessing that he'll be a captain before he leaves Columbus...the kid just "gets it".

I met Rolle his freshman year, and then earlier this year in the spring. OSU is truly a place where men are made. He went from a homesick, wide eyed kid with a chip on his shoulder to a fantastic senior and captain.

If 'Bino is being mentored by Rolle, then we have nothing to worry about.

I'm glad to hear he's behind this move. I gotta say, if it were me, I'd be hesitant to take a redshirt in the year my team is expected to play for a national championship. To have to tell my kids one day that "yeah, I was on that team, but I never played" would hurt.

Yeah, but it won't hurt as bad when you get to follow that up with "But, I started the next two years, on the OSU squads that won the first two Big Ten title games and made it to the NC game again."

Definitely good consolation! And, to be able to say he played with Terrelle Pryor AND Braxton Miller would be a pretty nice bonus.

NFBuck is 100% correct. The plan is to red shirt Sabino and from what I was told he is completely in favor of doing so. I just wish Sweat would have red shirted his freshman year so we'd have them both for two more years after this one.

Hell, who would be against staying another year at Ohio State?

And linebacker Etienne Sabino, a junior, is probably looking at a redshirt season. It's not for injury or any off-field reason, but Sabino has shifted to middle linebacker now, after getting beaten out by Andrew Sweat for the starting strongside linebacker job, and he probably wouldn't play much behind Brian Rolle. So a redshirt would give him a chance to have two seasons to start, if he wins a job next season after Rolle and Ross Homan graduate.

Pure speculation on my part, but I can't help but wonder if Sabino's redshirt year will be used to convert him to a DE....

I don't think so. We have tons of DE depth coming in and significantly less at LB. When Homan & Rolle are gone next year, we will need Sabino's experience and play at LB.

I am not convinced Sabino will start next year. Sweat already beat him at SAM, Bell is going to be tough to beat at WILL and Storm is going to be a beast in the middle. Sabino is a nice player, but OSUs depth at LB is strong.
