LB Etienne Sabino (official thread)

Tressel played Tedd Ginn at QB while Justin Zwick was hurt in the Alamo Bowl, just to keep from burning Todd Boeckman's redshirt. I highly doubt he'll burn Sabino's redshirt when we have guys like Jordan Whiting and Tony Jackson who will be good enough against Minnesota, and a bye week following.
The focus on Minnesota is misplaced.

The question is whether OSU can survive without Sabino against Iowa & Michigan. Minnesota would simply be a warmup for that purpose.

Good point

But if MSU beats Iowa this weekend and has only Minne, Purdue and a down Nittany Lion squad between them and an undisputed conference championship; one has to wonder if it would be worth it to burn a redshirt for a chance at a chance at an at-large BCS berth. As the MSU-Iowa game will almost certainly be decided before the kick-off at The Bank, it seems possible that 'Bino's redshirt might be a gametime decision.

Giving new life to Michigan is not worth an extra year for Sabino. Beat UM soundly and RR may be gone regardless of record (and a win or great effort vs OSU could rescue his season).

If they feel confident they can defend UM without Sabino, then redshirt him. Not having a competent option at Star can totally change the complexion of that game. Whether that is Sabino, Gant at safety to move Hines to Star, etc.

We may not be hearing the complete story on how bad some of these injuries really might be. Trust the coaches.

This.

Exactly what I thought when it first leaked yesterday.

I said a few pages back that no one player is bigger than the team and if not playing him is a bigger detriment (in particular because of the injuries @ STAR) they'd burn is redshirt. But I still thought he'd end up redshirting because other guys could step up. Since then...Corey Brown, Christian Bryant, Dorian Bell and Ross Homan are injured or done for the year. That doesn't include losing Moeller and Barnett.

Hopefully he still manages to keep it but I agree. Trust the coaches.

The focus is not misplaced...it is where it's supposed to be for now, and that's the next upcoming game. Wait until the bye week to decide whether or not to burn the shirt to be ready for Iowa and Michigan.

I'm hoping this is ok to copy and paste from the o-zone.

The big news of the day was that Tressel said Etienne Sabino probably won't go against Minnesota this week.

He admitted there was serious talk early in the week about taking the redshirt off Sabino because of the injury situation, but now he said it's possible Sabino may not even travel to Minnesota.

One major factor is the fact Tressel said he isn't sure Sabino was 1000% happy with the idea.
- Tressel also said that Christian Bryant is out of the hospital, but he has a lot to make up academically. Won't be available football wise for a while.
- Tressel confirmed what I reported earlier about Dorian Bell having two concussions this season. They didn't even consider him this week and he hasn't practiced since the Indiana game when he suffered his second one. Tressel said they are optimistic about getting him back this year.
- Ross Homan will not play against Minnesota.
- Today's practice will largely determine how much they play JB Shugarts against the Gophers. Tressel is assuming it will be a lot like last week.
- When asked about Pryor's comments about Ohio State still being better than Wisconsin and how they would beat them 9 out of 10 times, Tressel responded by saying "that's probably not something I would have said."
- In wake of the tragedy at Notre Dame, Tressel said OSU is fortunate because they have towers built to withstand 100 mph wind. Even with that, the Buckeyes were inside for practice on Tuesday. - Tressel said that he believes the Big Ten champs will be decided by how they play on the road. Has always felt that way.

If the staff is indeed coming to a final decision on Sabino keeping his redshirt, then I feel like we dodged a bullet on that one. Albeit, I'm of the opinion that team comes before individual; I just wouldn't think it wise (in terms of the individual/personnel management) to redshirt Etienne and then ask him to come back.

Simply unfair to the kid but also it would have been unfair to the team to sacrifice Sabino's depth (especially in Special Teams) for the first 8 games, then admit that he was needed later. We have tried to get by without him, so lets try to make that commitment stick when we have very plausible solutions (Newsome, Whiting) that don't involve burning his redshirt.

it is very important to have Bino keep his redshirt this year IMO - losing Rolle and Homan will hurt, but having a guy like Etienne to step up and be able to play for a couple years would help limit the growing pains that the LBers see next year

Keeping his redshirt actually will hurt us a little next year since Bino is taking basically scout team reps and will got no additional "game experience" this season.

It will help us in 2012 when we won't have to break in yet another first year starter.
