LB Jerome Baker (Seattle Seahawks)

JEROME BAKER WITH OPPORTUNITY TO PUSH FOR PLAYING TIME AT LINEBACKER FOR OHIO STATE IN 2016

Ohio State won't have many familiar names on its defense next season outside of starting middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan, a result of waving goodbye to nine stalwarts (if you count Joel Hale and Tommy Schutt, both were listed as co-starters) from the unit following a victory against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Buckeyes have recruited well under Urban Meyer at most every position, and the head coach dubbed the portion of the calendar ahead of spring practice "the winter of development" last week. Hardly any members of the 2015 recruiting class cut their teeth on special teams this past season, but one who did is linebacker Jerome Baker.

Baker is sitting behind soon-to-be juniors Dante Booker and Chris Worley at outside linebacker next to McMillan, but Meyer and his position coach Luke Fickell didn't mince words about his opportunity to make a splash once spring practice commences.

"On defense, you got a guy by the name of Jerome Baker with incredible talent," Meyer said Thursday. "He's gotta really step up."

DEVELOPING: JEROME BAKER DOESN'T CARE MUCH FOR GRAVITY OR USING TWO HANDS TO CATCH A FOOTBALL

Do you like one-handed impossible interceptions?

Well then you'll love what Jerome Baker pulled down for the Scarlet squad.

The sophomore linebacker provided the highlight of the 2016 Ohio State spring game in the 2nd half:

Jerome Baker is Proving to be a Natural Playmaker for the Buckeyes

There are many things players will learn during their time at Ohio State, but being a playmaker is not one of them. Plenty of players will hone their craft during their time as a Buckeye, but that natural ability to make a play is something that can’t be taught.

In Saturday’s spring game, sophomore Jerome Baker proved he’s one of those natural playmakers with a one-handed interception late in the third quarter.

“That’s just God given, making plays,” he said following the game. “I made a play.”

With the Gray team up 21-17 and inside the Scarlet red zone, Baker read the eyes of redshirt freshman Joe Burrow after a rollout and went up to make the pick.

“Our D-line, I just seen somebody coming back, our D-line got to him, and I seen Joe under pressure. He threw it up and I went up and got it,” Baker said of the play.

“They threw it up, made a play, and of course the linebackers come to hug me. They were the first ones there.”

He looked like the best linebacker on the team Saturday night....I think he should start the rest of the season.

One thing Urban has made it quite clear of, he will start the best players. Unfortunately for Booker he has an injury, and very well may find himself on the sideline when he returns from the injury just because of how great Baker is playing

Booker's best asset was his athleticism. That advantage does not exist over Baker.

But his size is. We need Bookers size against strong running teams. But they both need to be on the field. I would like to see Baker replace Worley who has been solid but not near at the level of Lee's play. I think Baker has the same abilities as Lee. He simply has to be on field. To me, odd man out goes to Worley. He is good but I'm not sure he will ever be great.
