LB Mike Mitchell (transfer to Texas Tech, transfer to Southeastern FL)

So I guess he won't have the same freshman impact as Katzenmoyer?
Well this tells it all I guess. A year ago we were hurting at the Linebacker position and I figured we would see a lot of Mitchell #44 but things have changed and now he will be red-shirted. That means we are getting real strong in our front 4 up front and we don't have to depend on our linebackers?........ I saw a lot of #48 Burger playing and I wondered where why no Mike Mitchell. So I guess we will have to wait and see huh?

Yeah I just thought the usual preseason hype was double strength for Mike this year and there were some pretty drunk fans on this site in August. Call it desperation given our lack of depth but the early infatuation with him coming in not only as a starter but a major force too was pretty funny.

I don't remember a lot thinking starter but I do recall many expecting LB play and a lot of special teams play. But yeah, fans pretty much always expect too much. Unfair really.

Brad Roby didn't play as a frosh, and now he's the best cornerback in the nation. There's plenty of time for Mike to become that major force. Based on his high school film, I still expect it to happen eventually.

May be partly because we're only playing two LBs most of the time. If we played a 3-4 like Wisconsin, he'd likely be seeing time but like Urban said this weekend, no sense in wasting top-level talent on garbage minutes. He'll be a stud next year.

Also, could the MM redshirt be indicative of the staff's belief that Raekwon isn't coming to Ohio?

If you look at the posts from the summer, there was a number of fans posting about Mitchell having a katzenmoyer like frosh status. Especially after putting up the 40 times he did and also his track times while still in HS as a sprinter. I can't blame fans for falling in love with the perceived next best thing, but he is only a frosh. Plenty of time to be a star, just hyped up a lot. And with grant not producing, that fed into the hype. Theres always next year, for him to get stronger and grasp the defense

And rugbybuck, I don't think urban wouldn't still completely pursue mcmillan with mitchell redshirting or not. He loves competition

Perhaps Grant is performing up to expectations and they're simply looking to get another years separation between the two while Mitchell learns the college game.

Another year and another set of people griping because a freshman isn't playing. Wash, rinse, repeat. Next year it will be McMillan (fingers crossed).

This. Honestly, I see it as a good thing despite my man crush for Mitchell. I am pumped to see Curtis play well and assert himself in the middle. Mike has an INCREDIBLY high ceiling and is going to be a big player here after some Coach Mick time and once he grasps the defense. A redshirt year will be great for his development imo and I am glad he does not need to play at this point.

I agree with the high ceiling, but if he reaches that ceiling will he stay 5 years?

They do not need him to win now. He is not big enough yet and he barely knows the d.

Is there a slim chance he could go pro early? Yes. Is that worth wasting a year and guaranteeing one year less? Especially for a unit that is struggling to field 3 usable lbslet alone depth?

To be fair, if we're still struggling to find 3 LBs good enough to play 4 years from now... we've got serious problems.
That said, I trust the coaches to make these decisions. I have to think, given how we've played other freshmen this year and the situation at LB, if he was ready -- he'd be in there in a heartbeat. He's not, so I'm assuming he's not in there b/c others are doing better at this point in time.
