Loudest Stadiums (split from Claytor thread)

1985 0r 86 against Iowa in the rain. Iowa came in ranked #1 and unbeaten. They left defeated with their tail between their legs thanks to Spielman and the boys. Loudest I have ever heard the stadium. I have been told (could be a rumor) that a table in the press box broke due to the noise vibration.....

1985. I don't think I believe the story about the table.

When Gamble crossed the goal line the instantenous increase in volume was spine-tingling even on TV...I can only imagine what it was like live.

I've a consecutive streak of home games going -- from 2002 season through this season for sure, and hopefully many seasons after.

2002 michigan was insanely loud -- but yes.. 2002 gamble pic on psu.

I actually blacked out from screaming after that play. Totally Blissful.

I actually think the Texas game had the potential to be really loud; but I am sure that many people shared the frustrating feeling i had throughout most of the game --- and i'm sure that played a large factor in crowd noise. But that game was also loud.

I decided we should deck ourselves out for that game -- seeing as it was the Woody Sign dedication.

that's me on the far left. Should have been one of the loudest games ever -- but didn't pan out.

I digress.

I agree with the poster who said Ohio Stadium gets loud in spurts. But I think that the way our stadium works nails how it should be. We're always loud on defense -- it's never 'quiet' -- but the noise level rises in response to the size of the play -- so momentum/suspense/emotion builds up. I like this better than constant screaming -- it makes the big plays/loud moments more worth it, and by no means are the other moments during defense 'quiet'. Also, we know how to shut up when the offense is on the field. Some stadiums dont get it -- they scream the whole time. We have a nice system.

I think if we ever double-decked the south stands, to match the rest of the stadium, that we'd be the loudest. Another structural improvement that could drastically increase noise level is constructing a similar luxury suite/pressbox structure on the other side of the stadium.

sorry they're sloppy.. but honestly its not worth the effort to make it look 'right' -- this is just for the 'gist'.

More people, and better acoustic structure = MEGA LOUD.

All of my games were viewed in Ohio Stadium, except for one. That was the Rose Bowl in 1980 against USC. The crowd there was probably as loud as any in the Horseshoe, at least when measured on a sustained basis.

My older sister and I sat right behind tOSU band...on about the goal or 1 yard line. I still find myself occasionally trying to pop my ears from the effect. :wink2:

I never will forget listening to the OSU Wisky game in 1954 when Hop Cassady intercepted a pass on about our ten and ran the length of the field for a game-turning TD. My desktop radio in Nerk litterally shook, and Marv Homan or whomever noted that it was the loudest sound he had ever heard in the Horseshoe. I have often noted that I think that was the play that in effect turned Woody into an icon, and he never looked back. Of course, it also probably won Hop the Heisman, eventually.

Go Bucks!

OSU isn't loud because it doesn't have a huge rowdy student base. Older fans just aren't as rowdy as big student bases are. OSU's fanbase is older than most. I'd put OSU somewhere between 5-15 with an exception to a texas game or a thrilling michigan game.

I have to agree, although there is no place I would rather go to watch big time college football. Even though it really pains me to say this but student section in Madison is out of control! The stadium overall might not be the loudest, due to size, but they have one hype student section. Also I have yet to see fans that drink more than they do. The whole state of Wisconsin is drunk on sat. or sun. in the fall.

Somebody should send the pic of the "renovated" south stands to the osu athletic department....that would bring capacity to around 125 or so I would imagine...

It should have been done the first time around -- it just makes sense size/acoustic wise, PLUS it would visually match the rest of the stadium (double decked, an make it the same height instead of shorter like it is now).

I doubt the stadium gets touched for atleast 10 years minimum.

I guess that would bring up the question of how much is too much...would OSU be able to sell 125 K for non big ten games? Would the stadium be able to accomodate? It would be interesting
I think 125k is way to liberal of a guess.

We currently seat around 102k book. The south stands is reported to hold around 17k I believe. In order to stack a deck on top, you're going to lose some seats to begin with. So, let's say we drop to around 14k in the existing south stands, taking our stadium total to somewhere around 99k.

Add that top deck, which is roughly equivilent to about lets say 1/2 -> 2/3 of the current south stands.

That estimate, would add between 8.5k and 11.2k, taking us up to 110.5 to 113.2k. We average a little over book attendence every game, usually by 2-3k. With these seats, lets say it moves by around 3k on average.

SO, we could range between 113.5k and 116.2k. Some would argue a bit more, some a bit less but I think that is roughly where we would end up.

there would be no problem selling out the place, but at some point you gotta ask, is bigger always better? Did anyone see the article in the back of the Buckeye Sports Bulletin a few months ago that talked about a possible renovation? There was an artists rendering of what it might look like. They were talking about adding 25k seats to the pressbox side. It made that side of the stadium look HUGE. But ruined the semmetry of the SHOE.
