...as a matter of fact, miami u. went to the gmac bowl in 2003.. they finished #10 in the ap poll. are you all saying that they didn't deserve a bowl game because it rewards mediocrity? how about marshall finishing in the top 10 under b. leftwich and going to the gmac bowl??

just curious what hardcore buckeye fans think.

My thoughts are that those are the exceptions that prove the rule...

Is it fair that teams of the MAC get hosed by bigger bowls when they really are deserving? Heck no. At least not if we're defining fair as "best teams go to the best bowls".

As an OSU fan I acknowledge it is incredibly easy for me to say this, but the real world just doesn't work that way. OSU has had the opposite problem on occasion. I remember the Sugar Bowl a few years ago. We were selected for it because of the size of our fan base and our "take it to the bank" TV audience; but we did NOT belong in the game. We were spanked by an FSU team that DID deserve to be there. The embarassment was exacerbated by the fact that OSU fans could see it coming and they didn't travel well that year.

Would it be nice if Bowl selections were based entirely on an OBJECTIVE analysis of which teams were best and on nothing else. Maybe.

But that's not even possible; and even if it were, it's not realistic. Sponsors put their money behind bowls to make more money, not because they want to make other people rich at their own expense.

Hey, you asked for my thoughts. My thoughts ramble sometimes...

although i agree that many bowl-bound teams are certainly are rewarded for mediocrity (mostly from bcs schools), oftentimes non-bcs schools with great regular season records play in these games. for example, the mac has an auto bid into each of the aforementioned bowls (gmac and int'l)... these teams have great seasons in their conference to get into these bowl games. they aren't like the iowa state's of the world who can go 3-5 in their conference and win a couple of cupcake games in their non-conference schedule.

Those two are definitely exceptions and even those teams weren't top 10 teams. It's easy to climb the rankings when you have a good team and don't play anybody. To me, no more than two mac/c-usa teams in a single year deserve a bowl game. The conference champion and maybe the runner up if the runner up had a good record and was upset in the title game. Most years the champions of those leagues have no more than eight or nine wins with a lot of easy wins against the likes of Buffalo, Ball State, EMU, Kent, etc. Heck, Akron was your champion last year, had seven wins and got shutout by Army at home. Bottom line, don't play this game in January. It's an honor that neither team deserves and frankly doesn't make any sense because even fewer people will watch it now than would have before and of course attendance will be poor no matter when it's played.

i agree that they shouldn't be played in january and have no idea why they were moved there (int'l bowl is new, i realize).

honestly, i dislike how bowls are developed and distributed. its a joke! like most, i'm in favor of a playoff.

i like to see good seasons rewarded, no matter what conference. having the 7th place big ten team get a bowl is a joke, no matter how you slice it. so, does the 4th place team in the mac or cusa deserve a bowl?? probably not.

buckeyenut, i absolutely disagree with you on miami and marshall and their top ten rankings. its much easier to stay up in the rankings when you start out the season in the top 10.. but to climb there from out of nowhere is an accomplishment. in 2002 there were only 2-3 big ten teams who would've been favored vs. miami by the end of the year (osu, iowa, and michigan). they were certainly worthy of top 10 in my opinion, and obviously of the nat'l media, bcs poll, and coaches poll (11th I believe). to completely discredit all of those?? i think that's a bit reckless. its okay to give credit to good teams from the mac, buckeyenut! is that your handle on jjhuddle too?

btw, akron won the mac east right now due to a ridiculous tiebreaker (crossover opponents stength of schedule). miami beat akron at home 51-23.

Worthy of a top 10 ranking? Hardly. Who did you beat? Nobody. Good three point effort against Iowa though. I'd argue it's just as easy to climb up the rankings by beating a bunch of nobodies while all the good teams from the Big Ten, SEC, Big XII are forced to play each other and knock each other off forcing the voters to move miami up by default simply because they have fewer losses.

I have no problem discrediting the polls, just like any mac fan. We always hear how dumb the polls are from you guys because they don't give the mid-majors any respect, but of course when they give a mac team a high ranking then it's the be all end all. By admitting those three teams would beat miami also proves my point because if you put miami in the Big Ten, there's three losses right there and you're no where near the top 10, thus proving the only reason you were in the top 10 was because of your weak mac schedule.(I just realized weak mac schedule is kind of redundent, but I digress)

It's only okay when it's warrented. The next time a team from the mac does something that makes me stand up and take note will be the first.

I don't care how you decide your champion, obviously miami wasn't that much better if it had to come to a tiebreaker. How come miami couldn't take care of niu who akron beat twice? Didn't miami only have seven wins themselves, so what's the difference, it still looks terrible when your conference champion has that many losses and let's face it miami wasn't a very good team last year anyway. I'd suggest next time don't lose at home to cmu and get run off your own field by bowling green and you won't have to worry about tiebreakers.

Does everyone else hate watching Notre Dame games on NBC as much as I do? I was watching the ND PSU game last saturday with my girlfriend who knows no other college football team other than The Ohio State University and she says and i quote "who is this Brady Quinn why do they talk about him like he is the second coming of Jesus" I just laughed and said its all because of Notre Dame. I think if he played for USC,UF,UM,FSU and even tOSU he would get the respect he deserves but since he plays on Notre Dame he is over hyped beyond belief.

This pretty much says it all... I figured that was you from JJ Huddle.

I don't get it? Are you arguing that a conference with this kind of all time record 1920-2005 deserves a lot of respect? A 13% winning percentage against the Big Ten? About 14% - 25% against the WAC, Big East, and Big 12?

Or that team that emerges from a conference with such a weak record against others has really accomplished something?

Without meaning to be confrontational, exactly what is it that we are supposed to be respecting here?

And if one wants more modern statistics, here's 1965 - 2005, which doesn't seem to be much different. You can make your own tables at http://football.stassen.com/records/multi-conference.html. Northern Illinois has a 5% winning record against the Big Ten and 11% against the SEC. Even Miami (Ohio) generally breaks even with other conferences and is only 32% against the Big Ten.

Again, without any disrespect, I just don't see how anyone who supports one of these teams can be upset that they don't receive bids to big bowls.

Ohio State a ratings hit for local TV

Monday, September 18, 2006Roger Brown
Plain Dealer Columnist
So far, Ohio State (3-0) has lived up to its ranking as college football's No. 1 team, and WEWS Channel 5 is particularly enjoying the glow of OSU's strong start.
Ohio State football telecasts on Channel 5 - which will show most Buckeyes games this season - are averaging a whopping 22.6 rating, up from a solid 14.6 rating this time last year.
In Cleveland TV, one rating point equals an estimated 14,000 households.
Ohio State's 37-7 win over Cincinnati on Saturday was aired by WUAB Channel 43. Audience figures for that game should be available today.
Ohio State football, part 2:
The OSU Monday night review show, "Buckeye Roundtable," will broadcast live tonight from Damon's Restaurant in Independence. The statewide show airs here 6 to 8 p.m. on WKNR AM/850.

Always great to see gameday comming to C-Bus. Them being there brings in more money off of sales (which we can us to help rebuild certain places on OSU campus).

I knew that they would either be in C-Bus to watch us versus PSU, or in Kinnick next week for the Iowa game.

They could be hosting an OSU game 3 times this year (vs. Texas, PSU and OSU). Anyone know what the record is?
