OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

Maybe Brian has some other hot takes on the OSU line that protected Boeckman then....?
Even if he agreed that the change was needed, it was done with no class (speaking about the staff), and there were lots of reports about Pryor not having the best attitude during that time.

Now you add in him essentially taking Brian's job and ending his career, and it's a bad setup. Not an excuse, just pointing out the obvious. Even if that's not the main reason it's not going to help.

They also stopped targeting Barn this year. None of that excuses an ill advised comment but I am not surprised it happened.

Uggg... I have distinct memories of making a post in a game thread (I think) after TP took over the job about the body language I saw on the field after a TD was scored. It was like there was zero joy among the players. Boone in particular, seems to stand out in my mind, as one who really looked disinterested in any kind of celebration post TD.

Maybe it's just me, but that's what I seem to recall. Given what Hartline and Boone have said this year seem to support what I suspected to be a very ugly locker room.

I suspect that whatever issues in the locker room existed have passed... with time and through Urb being there. At least I pray that's the case. Frankly, for what it must have been like, it's pretty dang amazing that the team performed the way they did during that period.

Well, after that first year, the team more or less became TPs team. So I would expect the locker room feeling to have shifted. But 2008 was probably a mess.

I WOULD be interested in hearing more from @jwinslow about the lack of class by the staff in the QB switch. I didn't realize it was handled poorly - the beginning of the end for JT.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Todd Boeckman is trying hard to take the high road.

The sixth-year senior is clearly heartbroken and humiliated that he no longer has a role other than non-playing captain on the No. 12 Ohio State football team. A star a year ago who was first team All-Big Ten at quarterback, he now stands on the sideline wondering what went wrong.

"I guess this hasn't worked out the way I planned it," he said on Tuesday night. "But if we're still winning, I'm all for it."

Four games into the season, after the offensive line had a sieve-like game in a 35-3 rout at then-No. 1 Southern California and Boeckman had to run for his life all night, coach Jim Tressel benched him and replaced him with freshman Terrelle Pryor.
Boeckman was not told about the decision. He noticed he was getting fewer snaps in practice leading into the game against Troy, but neither Tressel nor any of the other coaches ever sat down with him and discussed the situation until a week or so later.
:( Great kid that deserved much better.

Agreed about that being the end of JT. Ironically it was his first blockbuster national class (2002 was epic but was also mostly Ohioans) with superstars from all over. 2009 followed suit. In the end, he was undone by not signing more classes like 2007 (which was a spectacular collapse on paper with so many late misses yet the unheralded guys were studs, Dane, Boom, Rolle, etc).

Cautionary tale regarding this year's ZOMG (on paper) recruiting class. But I'm optimistic that Urban can keep a tighter handle on the players' buying into their own hype than JT did.

I think it will help immensely to have Martell arrive as the 4th or 5th QB. There's really no circumstance where Martell could pull a Pryor. Lindsey will be behind multiple H-backs, Grimes is a stud but they have Brown & Victor. Browning will play but likely backs up Booker, etc. Wyatt Davis could make noise but not at OT, and Prince might slide down and keep Davis as a monster backup. Chase Young will be behind Holmes, Bosa, Cooper. The DTs will be behind a deep group. There's plenty of opportunity for some PT, but most likely the only spot where they may start is at DB.

Pryor also had a lot of red flags in HS and JT enabled them. Meyer has done a good job of managing egos and handling stars at OSU, much better than he did at UF.
