I hope that Brian Hartline will be taken in the NFL draft and be able to achieve his dream to play there. I'm a bit surprised at some of the backhanded comments in this thread. Hartline caught some very important balls for us.

When Todd got benched, Hartline not only watched his close friend suffer through not playing but also watched his own centrality to the Buckeye game plan step back a notch. That can not have been easy to experience.

Here is a Buckeye player who contributed a lot over the years and is contributing further by graduating. I am sorry that he decided to leave because I think he could really have contributed next year.

Brian deserves our congratulations and best wishes.

Hartline gets invited to the combine....

February 1, 2009
Important combine invitations
The official invitations for the NFL combine are out (see here).

No surprise that Ohio State seniors Alex Boone, Marcus Freeman, Malcolm Jenkins, James Laurinaitis and Brian Robiskie were invited. We already told you that. And the addition of junior running back Chris "Beanie" Wells was expected, as well.

Good news for two other junior Buckeyes, though: Both Donald Washington and Brian Hartline are headed to Indianapolis later this month.

Ohio State's football team graduated 29 seniors from the 2008 squad. In addition to Todd Boeckman, James Laurinaitis and Brian Robiskie, juniors Brian Hartline and Chris "Beanie" Wells also declared for April's NFL Draft.

From the time each player declares until the draft, the process is similar to an audition for any other job.

A crucial first step in advancing into professional sports is hiring an agent, Hartline said.

"You have someone in your corner who takes phone calls and take the pressure off you," he said. "If you need something, they take care of you. So really, the process of determining your agent lightens the load a little bit."

The Combine starts today and runs until Feb. 24.

As athletes' schedules are dominated by NFL auditions, academics take a backseat, Hartline said.

"I want to get my degree, but really, it's not my main priority," he said. "For the next few months, it'll be working out at the Combine and doing football stuff. School being your second priority but still being really demanding is difficult. It's the biggest change, from being a college student athlete to declaring for the NFL."

Hartline plans to take his final courses this spring

I hope he posts some numbers at the combine. He doesn't have to (and probably won't) be off of the charts, but just good enough to keep/get teams interested. He's smart and tough enough to carve out a decent NFL career if he gets the right opportunity.

Best of luck, Brian.

Hartline will be a possession-type WR in the NFL, so his 40-time won't be as important as his agility and pass-catching drills.

Exactly. How many times in his pro career will Brian run a straight fly route, or even a deep post? He's going to earn his money by running crisp routes, and going after balls in traffic. Nobody's looking at him as a #1 WR, but he would be very valuable for a team in need of a solid possession guy. Hartline is the type of WR who compensates for his lack of straight line speed with quickness and agility. His numbers in the more agility bases events suggest he's more efficient in changing directions that the flat out speedsters.

I know Tressel gets knocked by everyone in the media about his offense but look at the success of WR's in his tenure. Holms, Ginn, and Gonzo all impressing their coaches and management. Our players seem to have a reputation for having good attitudes. Heck even Bam Childress got into a few New England games. Michael Jenkins had a good year now that he has a real QB. If he ran a 4.52 thats pretty damn good especially considering how he performed in the agility tests. He may go higher than most are predicting. We are WR U.

I don't know but that's how he got most of his catches last year. Troy, MSU, scUM, NU, YSU. But, he also showed a lot of ability as a possession receiver in '07. I think he showed off some nice versatility here.
