Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Even after spring ball, I'm still nervous of what our offense can do to USC's D. They've got Maualuga & Cushing returning at LB whom are very much in the same ballpark as Laurinaitis & Freeman (some say their 2 are better than our 2), and they could arguably have the best defensive secondary in the nation' led by Mays. I'm glad we're throwing in some new wrinkles this year with Pryor, the pony formation, and a bit more tinkering with the spread/option. I just hope it's enough come this "Game of the Year". Above all else, Boeckman and our O-Line cannot make mistakes and have to play well. Ultimately, I feel they are the key as to whether we win or lose this game.

I will say that I really like USC having the bye-week previous to this game with only 1 tune-up game, but I feel that probably just evens the playing field a little bit with the game being at their place.

I'm anxious to see how well we can control the line of scrimmage. If Wells can average even just 4-5 yards a carry, we'll be sitting great.

IMO, early in the season the tune up game is a big advantage over the bye week. I don't know many coaches that would want a week off vs a tune up before a big game early in the season if given the choice.

Also, one angle I don't see discussed here much is that early season games like this allow OSU 100% full concentration and an extra day of travel because classes have not started yet. Often glanced over but a big key imo.

I changed my mind on this one. A cupcake also allows some second half spread action with Henton/Pryor. The gametime action can't hurt considering the one is going from high school ball to the Coliseum.

Don't worry, USC is stacked. They've been piling up 4 & 5*'s for at least three years. Their O-line was at least three deep. Their LB's were four deep, and their first two sets of Lb's could have been teh Pac10's first and second team all-stars. Now we get to the RB's. Graduation, transfers took at least four of the 10 5*'s out of circulation. Their WR's are mostly 6'3-5" and can fly. D-line was the weakest, but they've got two back, plus 'super-freak' (DL from AZ) that was either 3-4 in the Scout last year.

QB, two player of the year type guys (Sanchez and Mustain), plus another 5*. Petey has stockpiled players like cordwood.

Methomps can correct me if I'm wrong (on the above as well), but I haven't heard ANY rumblings from Petey or the team about the OSU game. that disturbs me. Either we're not even on their radar (which I seriously doubt), or they are laying in the weeds. Make no mistake, it will be a tremendous game, and it wouldn't surprise me if USC is the 'dog here, which will further resolve them.

'Thomps, what's up with the lack of USC posters? Or the media attention?

Yes, USC has amazing linebackers. But IMHO it is the DL that has a greater effect on the running game. The best linebackers in the world can't tackle Beanie Wells when they have a 6'8" 300+ OL in their face. And even with the 'super-freak', the 2008 USC DL will be nowhere near the level of the 2007 LSU DL.

How is that comparison relevant you ask?

Because Beanie averaged 4.2 ypc against the 2007 LSU DL - and that's if you DON'T count the 65 yard touchdown run.

So to answer the question implicit in 'Ganoosh's post: Yes, Beanie can average 4-5 yards per carry.

The LSU reference to YPC makes a pretty good statement about the strength of the running game now. I am very confident he can get those averages and more.

Beanie gains....

>200, we win easy

>150 win close

>100 50/50

<100 yeah right

We should be able to bottle up McKnight, and PLEASE, Heacock, go man to man every once and a while. You've got the horses...

I am a USC poster, and I think lack of SC posters on this site is probably due to lack of people knowing about the site. Methomps posts on wearesc and he can tell you that the trojans ARE NOT taking the buckeyes lightly! You have a poster every so often that thinks OSU doesnt stand a chance, but the majority know better. As a SC fan, I am alittle more concerned about what seems to be a lack of concern by the fans of the UVa! I think every game is important {stanford} and anyone can win at any time! GOOD LUCK BUCKEYES {not saying you will need it} And hope for ALLfans sake, we see a great game! Just like the old days!

You guys aren't making any sense. The team with the most celebrities on the sidelines will win.

We're doomed. :(

Hold on just a second...

Try and follow me here.

Woody Harrelson, although born in Texas, grew up in Lebanon, Ohio. He was recently in a movie called "No Country for Old Men"...filmed in, you guessed it, TAOS NEW MEXICO!

If we can get Woody Harrelson on our sidelines...it's in the bag.
