Game Thread Ohio State 30, Minnesota 7 (final)

Some random thoughts from today's game:

1. Two plays kept this from being another blowout: (1) if Boeckman hits Hartline on the sail (he was wide open), Bucks go up 21-0; (2) not sure who the defensive holding call was on during Minny's TD drive, but the D was off of the field. No way Minny scores a TD.

2. Since I'm on the topic of officiating, I will get this off of my chest, and then shut up. With the speed and talent of our defense, how the hell can the opposition never be called for holding/illegal use of hands? The inconsistency of these Big 10 refs never ceases to amaze me. On the bright side, we did not receive a penalty for "hitting a defenseless player."

3. Not TB's greatest game, but he continues to grow. Nice to see him check down to the tight ends a couple of times.

4. Can't say enough about the impact of Robo. The TD catch was superb.

5. Nice to see Laurinaitis go home, and have a great game. A couple of times tonight, I thought I saw A.J. Hawk out there. JL attacked Minny. As a sidenote, Marcus Freeman played a physical game. Much more aggressive against the run than I've seen previously. For the Bucks to beat the more physical teams in the Big 10, Freeman must come up big.

6. There's something about this team. They continue to get better, and as a fan, you can't ask for more. The number of guys that contribute continues to grow, and that's great in terms of keeping the team focused. As I stated in another post, this team is a work in progress - and this coming week will be the toughest yet.

7. This is old news. I can't think of any coach that I'd rather have coaching tOSU than Jim Tressel.

8. Did I mention that Florida lost, ND lost, and another certain team up north struggled a bit?

I've never really paid much attention to Anderson Russell. I've known he was good, but tonight I especially noticed how good of a tackler he is. He made some great stops in the open field tonight.

I agree on the holding calls. I saw at least three instances of holding by Minnesota by WRs where the Buckeye defender's jersey was being stretched plain as day - no call. I can only imagine the ones they miss in the trenches. I'll admit I don't see that part of the game as well as other people do during live action.

Some random thoughts...I was on the phone for much of the 3rd and part of the 4th, but...
1. Beanie is a beast. He may have the most devastating stiff arm out there.
2. Robo is amazing. His body control on that TD was as good as I've ever seen. We've been spoiled with Jenkins, Santnio, Teddy and Gonzo since JT took over, but Robo may end up better than any of 'em...he's a special WR.
3. Like has been noted, Russell is an awesome tackler. They should show tapes of him for clinics.
4. Kurt Coleman can lay the wood with the best of 'em.
5. Cam Heyward is gonna be a superstar. He will be a top-5 pick in a couple years.
6. TB still needs to work on his touch, but he is cool under pressure, which will pay off when we face some better D's.
7. A.J. is continuing our tradition of great punters. He will be a weapon if we get in a close game, like I said earlier in the thread.
8. I can't wait to see what Ray Small does when he's definately 100%.
9. Suprisingly buttoned up offensively tonight.
10. Larry Grant is a freak!
11. He's no longer "Lil Animal". From now on, he's just Animal.
12. We are hands down the class of the Big-10.
13. War Goddamn Eagle!

Good point by jlb. To take it a step further, the defense as a whole is tackling much better this year. Have to think that this was a point of emphasis for the defensive staff this season.

I'll pile on... my thoughts:

On Defense: Marcus Freeman stepped his game up today. He looked lost against Washington, but today he was plugging gaps and really stopping their run. Larry Grant made a ridiculous play as well, and that run back was fun to watch. It was kind of disconcerting to see their short passing and option game work against us. Only going to get tougher against Purdue next week.

On Offense: Boeckman is making strides towards becoming a good decision maker - no INT"s which was good, but he did force throws into coverages and stare down receivers. As usual, he throws a mean deep ball and Robo and Hartline can attest to that. If/when our backfield is 100%, as well as Ray - look out. I think probably the only good thing about a long layoff between the bowl game and the end of the regular season is you can get all your guys who have nagging injuries rested up. If Beanie's ankle is bothering him and he was still able to make all those cuts and spin moves in traffic... well, I just started to drool on my keyboard a little bit. Even while gimpy he is starting to take over games and really garnering the attention he deserves.

Thoughts

Greetings, Buckeye fans!

I have a couple of thoughts on today's tOSU game.

First off, did you see what Minnesota wore?
:huh::lol::minn2::lol::huh:

Also, tell me what you think of this line: On SportsCenter, I heard something to the effect of "Good thing Minnesota wasn't playing Syracuse, otherwise your TV set would blow up." They were referring to Syracuse's hilariously bad orange uniforms.

With Purdue pummeling the Stinking Irish today, any chance the game in West Lafayette gets the Saturday Night Football or College Gameday treatment?

After what happened with Florida against Auburn, that game lost a TON of meaning IMO.

It won't get gameday but Herbie and Mussberger will be there for Saturday night to watch a team that stumbled up to 4th place. :roll2:

So true.

It's ridiculous to predict tOSU as the 4th best team in the Big 10 during ANY year, let alone this one.

But then again, I think that we've always had more fun proving people wrong, rather than backing up all of the praise :tongue2:.
