OSU REPEATS BIG TEN TITLE

Conley sinks game-winner; Lewis blocks Badgers' shot

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

COLUMBUS - Part of the standing-room-only crowd that stormed the court to celebrate Ohio State University's Big Ten championship heartily chanted ``One More Year.''
``So was I,'' OSU coach Thad Matta said.
But even if that wish is not fulfilled and 7-foot freshman Greg Oden did play his final game at Value City Arena on Sunday, greatness will still be on display next season.
Just look for jersey No. 1.

Conley's shot gives Buckeyes win over Badgers

RUSTY MILLER

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The ball and the ballgame was supposed to end up in Greg Oden's massive hands. Instead, his often-overlooked teammate since the sixth grade stole the show.
Mike Conley Jr. drove the lane and made a runner with 4 seconds left to give No. 2 Ohio State a 49-48 victory over top-ranked Wisconsin on Sunday, clinching the Buckeyes' second consecutive Big Ten title.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Mike Conley Jr. drove the lane and made a runner with 4 seconds left to give No. 2 Ohio State a 49-48 victory over top-ranked Wisconsin on Sunday, clinching the Buckeyes' second consecutive Big Ten title.
The game marked the first time Big Ten teams have met in a 1 vs. 2 game.
With the victory, the Buckeyes are likely to climb to the top spot in The Associated Press rankings for the first time since Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek and a sub named Bob Knight were ranked No. 1 throughout the 1962 season

Buckeyes repeat as Big Ten champs
Jim Naveau - 02.26.2007
COLUMBUS ? The chant began not long after Ohio State?s 49-48 win over Wisconsin on Sunday clinched a second straight Big Ten men?s basketball title for the Buckeyes.
?One more year. One more year,? was the message the crowd of 19,044 at the Value City Arena directed at 7-foot freshman center Greg Oden.
Oden just laughed off the fans? request to stay another year before going to the NBA minutes after the game was over. ?I thought they were talking about Ivan,? he said, with a smile, referring to senior Ivan Harris.
Oden scored 11 points and had six rebounds in what could be his last home game at Ohio State.

Victory an ugly beauty

Oden, Lewis help secure narrow win

Monday, February 26, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

The Plain Dealer
Columbus -- His face beaded with sweat, Ohio State coach Thad Matta sliced through the mob of students, grabbed the neck of Mike Conley Jr. in the crook of his arm and nearly popped off the head of his point guard in celebration.
Only the Ohio State Buckeyes know for sure if they really were missing something while winning every game they were supposed to and building a lead in the Big Ten standings.
If they were, maybe they found it Sunday.

Buckeyes repeat as Big Ten champions

Freshman Conley and senior Lewis come up with heroic plays in the final seconds.

"You enjoy this," OSU coach Thad Matta told his team. "This is something that we set out to achieve. Winning, repeating as Big Ten champions. Congratulations, we did it. But we play that school up north on Saturday."

Matta's getting in on the rivalry. gotta love it!

Ron Lewis blocks the shot of Wisconsin?s Kammron Taylor in the closing seconds.
While the Ohio State men?s basketball team kept winning, fans and others kept fretting. The Buckeyes didn?t always look good. They appeared at times to play to the level of their competition, toying with lesser Big Ten opponents like a cat yo-yoing a ball of yarn, a few times nearly choking on it.
Coach Thad Matta prodded his players to be more consistent. Many wondered when the lulls would catch up to them. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, another game against Wisconsin caught up to them first.

At least in the NBA he would be getting paid to sit on the bench if he was benched. I really thought Cook was playing well. He took 6 shots and none seemed bad, he was a bit short today, but I just think that was nerves from not playing. Harris was hot, but Lewis wasnt. Yeah Lewis got the block, but he also got blocked 2 plays before and it is pretty telling when the second loudest cheer of the night was when Lewis help up during transition and passed the ball to Connely. I felt bad for Cook because I think he should be getting more minutes.

You could tell from Cook's shots that he was really feeling the pressure yesterday, as he short armed 2 or 3 of his shots...

Also Lewis was playing great it was senior day, not sure how you take him out...Also that cheer wasnt directed at Lewis...

It also seems to me that Matta's a lot harder on him. Lewis is shooting far under what Cook is, but if Cook makes one mistake he is benched. Matta always seems in his ear when he comes off the court. I would think he was giving advice as to what to do, but he often benches him for the rest of the half.

Coaches know their players better than anyone of us and they will coach them how they see fit. I remember someone earlier in the season complaining about the way that Conley didnt get back on D and Matta didnt take him out, but he talked to him instead of just yanking him...

Fact is Cook could practice more in the NBA and if he isnt playing he might as well go get paid and not have restrictions on time with coaches. His ambition is to start a clothing line he says... I dont really think he needs a degree for that.

Well if that is what he wants to do then so be it, but the fact is he will be the starter at the 3 next year and will have a lot bigger role...Which would mean quite a bit more money like top 15 pick. At this point his stock has plummetted to late first early 2nd...

It's probably been said somewhere in the thread back when it happened, but that shot reminded me of Mark Baker's drive down the middle of the lane (at Wisky, I believe) where he exploded to the hoop past his defender to make a game-winner as time expired, then casually just kept jogging right to the locker room...awesome feeling then, and likewise for Conley's shot last night.

I am really too old for this crap.

Amen to that Steve.

For an old fart, I must have a fairly good ticker no to have croaked during this game or a few others during the season. Kind of reminds me of the football teams National Championship season with too many games decided by fewer then 7 points.

Congratulations to both the Men and Women's teams for outright Big 10 titles. Now on to the Conference championships and the NCAA.
