OOS DB Recruiting and Rivalires and whatnot (Split from Wallace)

OOS DB Recruiting (Split from Wallace)

I just don't trust that many OOS kids when there are kids in-state with similar talent. Miami made a killing off of getting kids from Florida that maybe aren't as highly rated as others from OOS.

What is up with the UT game? Is Tressel doing something for recruits during that game?

Who in state is "similar" to Wallace? Other than Coleman and maybe Ray Small, I don't think anyone.

What's up with the UT game? Biggest OOC game in at least 10 years. If I were a big recruit, I'd be there for sure.

After Coleman and Small theres a big dropoff in Ohio at DB. Maybe Robert Willliams from Winthrow will get some bigtime D1 offers but after that I dont really see anyone of interest. When you've got a bigtime athlete that can run a legit 4.4, play a couple positions, and most importantly has serious interest. Your not gonna pass on him just because Miami had some success with under the radar recruits from Florida..

I am sorry for the confusion. I am talking about Florida in-state players.

Texas-OSU is a big game, but I wouldn't say the biggest OOC game in the last 10 years. It might be the biggest OOC game this year though, depending on how other teams do this year.

Name one non-rivalry (e.g., FSU-Miami) OOC game in the last ten years that was bigger. First-ever meeting between two top-five all-time winningest programs with both being in the pre-season top 10, so tell how that's not the biggest.

Well you added the non-rivalry part at the end. The original statement was that this was the biggest OOC game in 10 years. That was the only statement that I disagree with.

Guys, I am not trying to take away from that game. It should be very interesting to see. I know I will watch it. It is a different game because these 2 teams never play each other.

OK, then, even with rivalry games, which FSU-Miami game (or other) was bigger than the upcoming Ohio State-Texas game?

Texas is desperately trying to prove themselves as belonging at the top of the pack... and they have as exciting of QB as possible plus a solid team to back that up. If you added up Miami and FSU's fanbase you probably could not match OSU or Texas during a good year. This year, at least leading up to the 9/10 matchup, both are extremely hyped and will feature the best scrambler vs. the best LBer(s). I would say the marketability of both teams will be in full swing, so combine them, at night, when everyone can watch this game alone, and you blow every other OOC game out of the water in the past 10 years easily.

Sorry, but Miami-FSU doesn't match up. Wasn't there one year where they matched up three times in the span of 12 months? I understand rivalry games can be big, but a victory here for either team will be far more significant (especially for texas) than one in the Miami-FSU matchups, IMO. Heck, Miami can't even sell out their seats once they lose a game or two. That alone shows the difference between Miami and OSU/Texas.

I will not torture myslef and try and rethink ANY Miami-FSU game. Each time those 2 teams play, I cheer for the officials.

Just to name one right off the top of my head, I would go with 96 Florida at Florida State. Florida was #1 while FSU was #2. It was the final game of the year, so the winner goes to the NC game while the loser misses out. (or so we thought) Both teams were 10-0. FSU won that game 24-21, but Florida won the SECCG and went on to crush FSU by 32 points in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship.

That is the biggest OOC game I can remember in my lifetime. You have all the elements:

-#1 vs #2
-Last game of the year
-Spot in the National Championship game on the line
-2 teams without a loss (10-0 vs 10-0)
-Clearly the 2 best teams in the country at the time. (and in the end)
-BITTER, BITTER Rivals
-Amazing offense vs a wicked defense

The first 3 things I mentioned are enough to make it #1. All the rest is just media hype for the talking heads to latch ahold of.

This game has been all over every sports network throughout the offseason. Young looked like superman, Ginn pushes Bush for the most exciting & dangerous player in CFB, and like I said before, the weekly fanbase of OSU or Texas trumps UF, FSU or Miami easily. I have a feeling many more people missed the 96 UF-FSU matchup than will miss the 05 UT-OSU matchup.

Florida's fanbase is very strong and so is FSU's. Don't confuse their fanbase with that of Miami.

I understand that you are proud of this game. I would be proud of this game as well. I have said that it is a fantastic game and I am looking forward to it. But you can't compare a game in week 2 of the year between #2 vs #9 to #1 vs #2 during the final week of the regular season. I have no idea what the TV ratings were for that game. All I know is that it was on National TV. If people in Ohio or Texas chose not to watch it (which I doubt happened at the time) then so be it. That doesn't take away from the game and how HUGE it was.

This is an OSU board so clearly I have little room to say that a UF game is bigger than an OSU game, but come on. Cut me a little slack here. #1 vs #2. 10-0 vs 10-0. Bitter Rival vs Bitter Rival. Spot in the NC game on the line. Amazing offense (with Heisman Trophy winner at QB) vs an outstanding defense. It just doesn't get any bigger than that. It would be hard for ANY OOC game (or game at all for that matter) to compare with #1 vs #2 during the last week of the regular season.

I guess it depends on what people are talking about when they say "big." Many of us, such as Mili and myself, think we will handle VY and pass all over their D... therefore making it not nearly as good of a matchup as yours. However in terms of how big it is for hype I personally there is no comparison. This game occurs during an era much more marketable and hypeable thanks to 24 hour sporting networks, the internet, and fan pages talking smack. Highlight videos and talking smack was much harder to do unless you happened to have a lot of fans of both teams that you knew. And you didn't read nearly as many publications regularly, b/c they were not as easily accessed, especially not for free.

I'd be willing to accept that the game might have been bigger. But this one is way bigger in terms of hype and how many will tune in. It will have pretty large implications on the season, tho I admit the final game of the season is bigger.

I still disagree with you, but I can understand where you are coming from better now. Things have certainly changed in the last few years with the creation of internet message boards (like this one) and the such. I still don't think a matchup of 2 vs 9 in early September can generate more hype than a 1 vs 2 in late November.

When I think of "the biggest college football game in the last 10 years", I think of overall importance, and nothing is more important than 1 vs 2 in the last week of the regular season.

Just imagine of OSU and Michigan were both 10-0 entering the final game of the season, with OSU being #1 and Michigan being #2. A spot in the NC game on the line and everything. Then imagine someone telling you that an early season game between 2 top-10 teams is bigger.
