Adams sets his sights high

Teresa Varley Steelers.com

For most rookies the first year in the NFL is filled with growing pains, brought on by the challenge of learning a new offensive scheme, adjusting to football now being a job, intense competition on a daily basis and a laundry list of other things.

Mike Adams was no different than any rookie last year, when the second-round draft pick from Ohio State had his bumps in the road to deal with. But he came through it all relatively unscathed.

Adams got off to a bit of a rocky start when he was thrown into the fire in the season opener against the Denver Broncos after right tackle Marcus Gilbert injured his knee. His performance wasn?t the stuff highlight films are made of, but it didn?t deter Adams. It just made him stronger.

Adams once again found himself in the spotlight when the Steelers played the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 21, making his first NFL start with Gilbert sidelined with a knee injury. This time the results were different as Adams was part of a line that helped the Steelers gain 167 yards on the ground en route to a 24-17 win.

?A lot of the adjustments last year had to do with the mental game and getting comfortable with that,? said Adams. ?Plus it?s getting used to everybody being great players. In the NFL everyone is the best of the best. Overall those were the toughest things. But I thought it went all right.?

Whether former Buckeye Mike Adams starts at right tackle or left for the Pittsburgh Steelers next season will apparently be determined by the team’s off-season practice sessions. The team’s coaches have said that either Adams or Marcus Gilbert will start a left tackle, depending on how they fare in workouts, and the other will go to the right side.

At his pre-draft press conference, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said "I think one of the things that we learned through the trials of the 2012 season is that both of those young men are capable of playing both spots."

The Steelers aren’t expected to re-sign Max Starks, who started at left tackle last season.

Pittsburgh Steelers? Mike Adams will be under pressure at left tackle

Mike Adams will be under pressure at left tackle

Now that the NFL Draft is in the books and the Pittsburgh Steelers look set with the group of players they will be taking into training camp in July, the performance of one guy in particular could determine the fate of the Steelers in 2013.

That man is second-year offensive tackle Mike Adams.

There are quite a few players that need to step up and show that they can do the job for this team. Cornerback Cortez Allen is a guy that also comes to mind, but Adams could be under the most pressure of any Steeler to perform at a high level right away.

All signs right now point to Adams getting the first crack at protecting Ben Roethlisberger?s blind side as he will be shifting to left tackle.

The 2012 second-round pick has to not only prove he can stay healthy, but handle the adjustment from right tackle, where he played as a rookie in 2012.

Even though he?s entering his second year in a Steelers uniform, Adams is basically still a rookie with a lot to learn. He sprained his MCL in the preseason opener and returned a short time later, but Adams? rookie season then ended in November after he suffered an ankle injury.

In 10 games at right tackle, he allowed seven sacks and 16 quarterback hurries, which doesn?t give you a lot of confidence in him off the bat. On a positive note the Steelers rushing attack was at its best once Adams settled in at right tackle a season ago.

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams has started the team's organized team activities, or OTAs, working exclusively on the right side of the line, he told Steelers.com yesterday.

That means Marcus Gilbert gets first crack at protecting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's blind side. Gilbert, a second-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft, has made 18 starts and primarily played right tackle in two seasons.

"I haven't [practiced on the left side]," Adams said. "If I do need to, I'll be ready."

Adams was also a second-round pick who could have been more, falling to the No. 56 overall pick after testing positive for marijuana at the NFL combine.

The Ohio State product played in 10 games at right tackle as a rookie and made six starts before suffering a high ankle sprain that kept him out of the team's final six games.

Pittsburgh appears to be making a choice this spring, the consistent, even approach of Gilbert over the superior athleticism and upside of Adams.

What a "censored"-up society we live in, just full of animals that have no regard whatsoever for human life.

All that being said, best wishes to the big'fella on a full and speedy recovery. The fact that I'm a Browns fan/Steeler-Hater doesn't come in to play here. "Once A Buckeye, Always A Buckeye" does though.:oh:

Peace

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said right tackle Mike Adams is expected to make a full recovery and will be released from the hospital in the next 24 hours.

Adams, a 6-foot-7, 323-pound second-year player from Ohio State, was stabbed once in the stomach and once in the left forearm as he tried to stop three men from stealing his truck from the intersection of East Carson and 17th streets around 3 a.m. Saturday, Pittsburgh police said. He underwent surgery at UPMC Mercy. No arrests have been made in the case.

Tomlin addressed the incident during a press conference this afternoon at the Steelers' South Side training facilities.

"I visited with him a couple days this weekend. He's got great team support [and] family support. We expect a full recovery. He realizes of course how fortunate he is. We're just glad he is going to be ok, and we're just taking it day by day," Tomlin said.

"They're expecting six weeks or so. He's going to go through a couple of weeks of inactivity until he can proceed with the next step, but obviously the next step for him is getting out of the hospital. We expect that to come within the next 24 hours, and he'll proceed from there."

Arrest made in stabbing of Steelers tackle Michael Adams
June 3, 2013
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh police have arrested a man in the stabbing of Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Michael Adams.

Police this afternoon said they charged Michael Paranay, 25, of Hazelwood, with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and conspiracy.

He was being held in the Allegheny County Jail, and police said they continue to seek other suspects in the stabbing.

Mr. Adams was injured early Saturday during what police described as a carjacking attempt near the intersection of East Carson Street and 17th Street.

Mr. Adams was stabbed once in the stomach and once in the left forearm as he tried to stop three men from stealing his truck. He told officers he was outside his truck and didn't have his keys when three men approached.

One man pointed a gun at Mr. Adams and another man stabbed him, police said.

Police said a witness flagged down an officer at about 3 a.m. Officers found Mr. Adams at Cambod-Ican Kitchen on 17th Street.

A valet at Nakama Japanese Steakhouse said that Mr. Adams had left his keys with the restaurant's valet service Friday night and did not return to pick them up before the service shut down at midnight.

Mr. Adams injuries were not life-threatening, and Steelers officials have said they expect him to make a full recovery in time for the upcoming season.

Adams makes appearance at Steelers
June, 12, 2013
By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams made his first appearance at practice since being stabbed twice on June 1 in an attempted carjacking.

Adams, a second-round pick in 2012, was seen on the practice field as the Steelers wrapped up their second day of mandatory minicamp. He was not made available to reporters.

"He had an appointment today (and) the appointment went well," Tomlin said. "He's just continuing to take steps to get back out on the field."

Team officials believe Adams will be cleared to resume football activities in about six weeks.

"All of the guys were excited," center Maurkice Pouncey said. "Everybody knows the things he's been through and the times he has look forward to right now in trying to get back."

Adams is expected to be the Steelers' starting right tackle. Last year, his rookie season ended in November after he suffered an ankle injury. In 10 games at right tackle, he allowed seven sacks and 16 quarterback hurries.
