31 points from our bench is awesome! Great minutes from Simmons off the bench. Nice to see him hit some 3s and not be afraid to pull the trigger. Madsen played some nice minutes tonight. And this might sound crazy, but even though Evan only scored 6 tonight, I think it was one of his better performances. He took control and made great decisions down the stretch. He could've easily gotten frustrated and started throwing up bad shots. But he didn't. He fed open teammates and created offense. GREAT leadership out of him! 8 assists to 2 turnovers from ET.

PJ really made the most of his first start. 13 points and only 1 turnover! Nice to see him drive to the hoop a few times and make something happen. And I loved seeing him hit some outside shots as well. Teams have to think he's a threat to pull the trigger out there or he doesn't help this offense much.

The negative I saw was still rebounding. These guys just seem to let people blow right by them and steal the board. The one time that sticks out to me was when the PSU guy was called for basket interference on a tip in of his teammates shot. They showed it in slow motion as 4 Buckeyes stood there and watched the PS player run right by them and tip it in. Our guys just don't seem to get after it quick enough sometimes. Hard to rebound out of zone though...you really have to find a body fast and get after it.

Nice win...we really needed that one! :oh::io:

Yep. A good game and a great way to set up the next few games.

Got home and checked the stats for this game and it resulted in a "wtf?"

Looks like it was a complete team effort tonight.

Nice right? :)

Madsen played 18 minutes? Is that his season high? Interesting that we found ways to score with Buford on the bench and Evan not scoring. Nice to see some guys step up.

I found the minutes break down really interesting.. Turner played 38, Diebler the whole 40.. Hill had 19 and Simmons had 21. If this team goes into a tournament run it will be an equal effort from positions like our Point Guard situation. Same with Center, I don't really like having Lauderdale and Mullens on the floor at once, but that's situational.

A deep 3 by Babb makes it a 13-0 run.

19-15. Another 3 by Babb, 19-18.

:( Congrats on the win. Babb has a sweat stroke (not similar to Pringle's :tongue2:) and it is evident watching him, when he starts seeing it go through he can get really hot. I'm confident about PSU's future, particularly next year, but the size disparity clearly hurts. Pringle makes inexcusable plays, and takes ill-advised shots just for the hell of it. Our offense blows...other than when Battle, Pringle or Morrissey make it look awesome. Battle would probably take 3s from out at half court if he thought there was a chance it would go in; DeChellis probably wouldn't even say anything. :!

I don't know what the hell we're going to do with Cornley gone after this year, as he seems to provide all the grit, BSing and toughness. We'll only lose Pringle, Morrissey and Cornley so we should be alright...I have a feeling we'll be even better next year as long as Andrew Jones (my fav player) continues to progress. He has only been playing organized BBall for 4-6 years now. Talor Battle, Chris Babb, David Jackson (has sucked this year, good last year), Jeff Brooks (isn't progressing at all...former 4* recruit from Kentucky) and Andrew Jones gives PSU a real nice nucleus for the coming years.

We only have three commits; a 6'8 230 pound foreigner (SF/PF) from North Carolina that can score, a G/SF from PA that is rehabbing a knee & a 6'2 165 pound PG from TX. The PG from TX is the reigning high school national defensive player of the year, could/will play as a true freshman, as well as be the eventual successor to Battle at the point. It'd also be nice if we could get Talor's stepbrother, T. Buie, both from a talent standpoint and for the perception of PSU BBall...he is a big-time recruit but Battle/Buie would only play together for a year.

Having Battle for two more years, Frazier who is a mid-range/drive guy strictly, Babb from 3, Woodyard who can hit the 3 but is more mid-range/drive-rebound, Jackson/Brooks/Ott/Borovnjak/Oliver at SF/PF and Jones/Ott at C seems to be a better team than the current one.

PG - 5'11 165 JR Talor Battle, 6'2 165 FR Tim Frazier (3* recruit)

SG - 6'5 205 SO Chris Babb, 6'5 195 SO C. Woodyard, 6'4 185 FR Jermaine Marshall

SF - 6'6 200 JR David Jackson, 6'8 210 SO Billy Oliver

PF - 6'8 235 JR Jeff Brooks, 6'8 225 FR Sasa Borovnjak (3* recruit)

C - 6'10 265 SR Andrew Jones, 6'10 245 Andrew Ott (Villanova transfer - PF/C...playing this year)

Simmons helps Buckeyes snap three-game slide

By the Associated Press

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

COLUMBUS ? Jeremie Simmons, benched for the first time all season, came off the bench to score 14 points and lead a second-half surge as Ohio State beat Penn State 73-59 Tuesday, Feb. 24, to end a three-game losing skid.
Simmons scored the last five points of the first half to give Ohio State a lead, then hit three 3-pointers as the Buckeyes (18-8, 8-7 Big Ten) took control by scoring 25 of the game's final 35 points.
P.J. Hill, who replaced Simmons to start for the first time in his 49th game at Ohio State, had a career-high 13 points. So did freshman center B.J. Mullens. Another freshman, William Buford, added 11 points, all in the first half.
Evan Turner, second in the Big Ten in scoring at 17.2 points per game, did not score in the opening 32 minutes and finished with just six points. But he had a career-high eight assists to go with six rebounds.

This was one of the few games televised here and it was my first opportunity to watch the team for an entire game.

1. What is it about Buckeye teams collapsing after dominating an opponent in the early going? Thank goodness that we did the same thing going out the door that we did coming in. Really guys, I don't need this nonsense at 2am. Get 'em down and put 'em away. Please. If it's not too much to ask.

2. If you look at the two sustained periods where Ohio State dominated Penn State, the Buckeyes played more aggressive defense and the guards attempted to get penetration into the paint. The Bucks gave them far too many open looks when PSU came back in the first half. PSU were shooting the lights out, but Ohio State contributed by giving them too much open space to launch those shots against the zone. We need more penetration. We have seen year after year that Coach Matta's offensive schemes work better when the guards are getting more penetration. Guards like penetration.

3. Evan Turner appeared to let Cornley get into his head with apparent trash-talking. He needs to ignore that stuff.

I enjoyed watching the team the last few minutes of the game. I think this one will help a lot.

Unselfish at the point, Ohio State gets a much-needed win over Penn State, 73-59

Terry Gilliam/Associated PressPenn State's Danny Morrissey (33) does the best he can to keep Ohio State's Kyle Madsen away from a loose ball during the second half of Tuesday's game in Columbus. Madsen had four points and four rebounds in the Buckeyes' 73-59 victory.

COLUMBUS -- Maybe Ohio State started to solve its point guard situation when the starting point guard asked to be benched. That's the request that OSU junior Jeremie Simmons made Monday and OSU coach Thad Matta granted for Tuesday night's game against Penn State, the first time in Matta's career that a player wanted to sit. Matta said usually it's kids -- and parents -- saying that they should be starting.
But Simmons was right. P.J. Hill deserved the start. With the Buckeyes on a three-game losing streak and in need of a switch, they changed their lineup, their defense and their fortunes with a 73-59 win over the Nittany Lions.
Ohio State (18-8, 8-7 Big Ten) moved into a four-way tie for fourth in the conference with Wisconsin, Minnesota and Penn State (19-9, 8-7). The Buckeyes didn't lock up an NCAA Tournament bid, but they can once again feel confident about their position.
And their point guards.

"I just told [Matta] I think I'll more productive coming off the bench," Simmons said. "I'm a real person. I understand P.J., he works hard. I knew he would start us off strong on the defensive end. So I just wanted him to start."
Hill plays much tighter defense than Simmons, and when he started off harassing Talor Battle, the Big Ten's leading scorer, in a triangle-and-two defense, he was obviously the man for the job.

Strange, strange game.

19-2 OSU
42-22 PSU
32-13 OSU

Tell me before hand that OSU will have 4 in double figures and none will be Diebler or Turner. Great game for both Simmons and Hill. Nice to see those shots falling.

Dallas is a marked man in Big 10 play...I've never seen so many moving ball screens and offensive fouls called on one player.

Right on. They let Cornley throw forearm shivers (I saw at least 3) at chasing guards in the first half but call an absolute garbage foul on Lauderdale where the player looked right at the ref during the play, then went over and drew the call with a flop. Pissed me off something fierce.

The illegal screen call on Madsen shortly after did not improve my mood.

Was that the one where it went something like this?

Dallas gets ball
Bump

[beat]

Flop!

The wife and I were pretty upset by that one too.

Actually, it was the other one.

Bodies banging on near side post
Dallas moves to far side of post
As defender follows Dallas to the other side of the post he looks at the baseline official and raises his arms in a "where's the call" gesture
Dallas begins to post up
Official calls offensive foul

I happened to be watching the post rather than the ball and I didn't see anything there that doesn't go on in every single post-up move.
