Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

The story I saw, and have seen it repeated on BWI, is that they were playing at USC, who were using some form of the "We Are" chant. They liked how it got the crowd involved and adopted it, changing it to the "call and response" version they use now. I'll try find a link, but yeah, they ripped it off from the Trojans.

Like every other tradition of theirs... color outs, paternoville, kernkraft, zombie nation, cat snarl, urine balloons, etc.

Other than Texas A&M and Miami of Ohio, there is no other school on the planet for creating grandiose, self-serving myths about itself that its students and alumni then proceed to disseminate as gospel..

The reality is that Joesus, after Ohio State lost, could have set up a 1-2 showdown with Texas if he had wanted it. He chose to duck the Longhorns with the hope of winning the NC in the polls. Of course, Joesus and his cult have come to tell the story as Joesus refused to take his black players into Texas, and selflessly gave up a shot at a NC in order to look out for their safety. Those three kids in Mississippi? Those three girls in Birmingham? Fuckin' amateurs. Joesus won the fight for civil rights by refusing to play a football game.

They've created a similar--and similarly fabricated--story as to how the whole WE ARE chant came about.

Say what you will about the tenets of Wolverinism, but at least it's an ethos. These fuckin' people, dude. These are not worthy adversaries.
Yeah, Joe must have remembered what a disaster it was for Syracuse to take black players down to texas to play in the cotton bowl a decade before, when segregation was still legal. Oh, wait, Syracuse kicked Texas' butt and won the NC....

Hmmmmmm. Play for an NC in Dallas - Cotton Bowl, or New Orleans - Sugar Bowl. There are real, historical reasons - fax and evidents - for where most bowl games were/are played. 1969 comes after most SEC teams had begun to integrate, making Joesus' argument specious, but it was only a decade earlier that Syracuse accepted a bid to the Cotton Bowl on the premiss that it would leave its black player at home. They later played in the same bowl WITH their black players.

Penn State fans would be on much firmer grounds if they argued that they were being asked to play for the NC in Texas' home state, no small advantage to the Longhorns in my estimation.

The original 1947 Rose Bowl contract between the Big Ten and the Pacific Coast Conference reflected their stances on integration, amateurism, and the desire to have a post season game where blacks would be free to participate. The Orange, Cotton, Sugar and Peach Bowls did not begin to allow black players until the late 50s.

Common theme here. Joesus had the opportunity to make a statement against segregation and discrimination, but instead opted to protect himself and his perfect record. Years later......well you know. At least he stayed consistent in that he didn't ruin anyone's weekend.

Didn't matter. The year still went up on the erector set. I remember reading that Joesus bought the teams rings whenever he felt he deserved the NC but didn't win it in the polls.

#1 There is an advertisement for some Liam Neeson movie that pops up when you go to Penn State's official athletic site. WTF?

#2 I have looked at Penn State's record in '68, '69, '73 and it is pathetic. My general thesis was something along the lines of: Penn State blazed the trail for Boise State's model of national relevance.

#3 1894? Are they joking? They were 6-0-1 that year, beating: Gettysburg, Lafayette, Bucknell (at Williamsport), Washington & Jefferson, Oberlin, Pittsburgh Athletic Club and tying Navy. Why not claim 1887 as well when they beat Bucknell twice for a stellar 2-0 record? The amount of douche it takes to put 1894 up in their stadium defies words.

#4 I don't even feel like going through 1909, 1911, 1912, 1920 and 1921 other than to say DOUCHEBAGS.

#5 2005 must have been a Paterno special. "We would have won if we didn't get screwed over in various ways. Success with Honor, everyone else cheats. Put it up there because I say we deserve it and that's all that matters."

Absolutely. It's a matter of faith on BWI that the pedsters would have won the NC in 2005 had the referees not conspired to steal the Michigan game away from Joesus. Poor Joesus. It's a wonder he could even hold his head up at the end after being forced to wear that crown of thorns since 1993.

I love that they think they would have gotten into the title game over Texas or USC.....and completely ignore that the 2005 title game is considered as the best BCSNCG and probably the one that best exemplifies what the BCS was trying to do by pitting #1 vs #2.
