Ohio State point guard Aaron Craft is Big Ten's top defender this year
Mar. 9, 2012

COLUMBUS -- Aaron Craft is a different breed of basketball player.

Most enjoy shooting or dribbling or passing. Craft's joy? Defense.

"Growing up, it's something I always enjoyed doing and took great pride in and it was something I could do well in any game regardless of how well offensively everyone else was doing," the Ohio State sophomore point guard said.

Craft's mind-set was rewarded this week when he was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, joining Greg Oden and Ken Johnson as Buckeyes who have won the award.

"It all starts with him," OSU coach Thad Matta said of the team's defense, which ranks among the best in the country. "The majority of the time he's pointing the ball. He's disrupting."

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, someone who knows and appreciates great defense when he sees it, was impressed by what he saw from Craft after his team beat the Buckeyes 58-48 on Feb. 11 in Columbus.

"The guy is the best on-the-ball defender that I've ever seen," Izzo said. "(Mateen) Cleaves and (Travis) Walton for me were good, and I've seen a lot of guys from a lot of schools who were good, but he can just maintain that. So we're dribbling, dribbling, dribbling, and think we're getting away from him and we're not getting away from him."

Another early prediction: Craft will break the career steals record at tOSU, which is currently 204 by Jay Burson.

The single-season record is 87 (by Mike Conley, Jr. in 2006-07), I'm not sure that he'll get that one.

agreed. i made the same prediction elsewhere. heck, as long as craft stays healthy, i think he'll obliterate the career steals record. i also agree that conley's single season record likely won't be broken.
craft is sitting at 79 steals. the single-season steals record is in reach.

edit: scratch that. espn has not updated the season totals. with today's 3 steals, craft is at 82. maybe saturday...

Would be nice to see him get there Saturday. Love Craft's energy out there. He always seems to be hustling...always.

Meanwhile, I was pleased to see how he penetrated a bit more against MSU. Sometimes he missed the layup because of traffic down low, but it was still good to see as it keeps defenses honest. And it also allowed for some easy rebounds and put-backs. I hope Craft keeps that up....if he could slowly learn to attack on offense the way he does on defense...watch out.

Craft may have played his best game as a Buckeye today against Gonzaga. First career double-double, at the most important time. His performance against Duke is up there as well, but I think this was his best overall performance for OSU. And he got robbed on that call by the ref that ruled him out of bounds when he actually made a brilliant play in the last minute.
